Nominating Criteria
The Commission on the Status of Children and Youth (CSCY) are asking nominators to consider the four criteria that reflect the spirit of S.W.A.G.G.E.R. when nominating their student: Generosity, Personal Growth, Respect for Others, and Impact on Community. Judges will evaluate nominees based on both the quality, number, and impact of examples given in the description.
Generosity: Acts of Service & Kindness -- How does this student demonstrate generosity in their words, actions, or time? Have they helped someone in need, gone out of their way to support a peer, or consistently shown kindness to others? Do they check in on their friends, care for a sibling, or make others feel seen?
*
Example: “Joey walks his younger siblings to school and helps them with homework." or "Jamari brings a special treat in his lunch box for his friend every Friday."
Personal Growth: Resilience & Self-Improvement -- How has the student grown as a person and citizen? How have they been resilient? Think about moments of leadership, perseverance, or setting and achieving personal goals.
*
Example: “After struggling with anxiety, Layla worked with a counselor and now helps other students with anxiety at school. Her confidence has grown, and she encourages others to seek support.”
Respect for Others: Inclusivity & Integrity -- How does the student earn and show respect? Consider how they create inclusive environments, resolve conflicts kindly, or stand up for what’s right. We're especially looking for stories of emotional growth, effort, moments where they kept going even when it was hard, or showing honesty even in tough situations.
*
Example: “Micah makes sure everyone feels welcome at the lunch table, especially students new to the school. He helped mediate a peer conflict by listening to both sides and encouraging compromise.”
Impact of Community: Making a Difference -- What impact has the student had on others? Describe their contributions to their peers, school, or community? This could be in their school, neighborhood, family, or through a specific project or effort. The impact doesn't have to be 'big' - sometimes helping one person or creating a safe, kind environment is enough to make a real difference.
*
Example: “Alondra started helping her elderly neighbor carry groceries and take care of their dog. She checks in weekly now and brings cheer to someone who doesn't have much support."
Is there anything else you want us to know about the student? You can use this space to share anything unique about this student’s personality, story, or background that would help the judges better understand who they are. We're looking for the heart of their story, how they show up for others, and why they deserve to be celebrated. Any and all information is helpful!
