Your Role as an Ashinaga USA Mentor
We hope our mentors can support our mission to foster in our students the desire to return to their home countries/elsewhere in Africa and make a difference. Prior to the return, some students will use their right to work in the United States with a temporary work permit for one to three years, and/or attend a postgraduate program.
Thus, while you can feel free to touch on topics like academics, social life, and plans for summer jobs/internships, we would be grateful if the focus of the mentorship overall is professional development and the student’s eventual contribution and/or return to Africa.
We hope you will meet or check-in with your mentees at least once a month. You can feel free to use those meetings as you deem appropriate, including checking in on academics, on social life, on plans for summer jobs/internships. We would be grateful if the focus of the mentorship is professional development
We will reach out to you every 3-4 months to offer our support as needed, but please feel free to contact us if you feel we can support your mentoring efforts. We ask that you always reach out if you detect any concerning behavior (lack of focus on studies, depression, deteriorating grades or any other matter).
