  • CODE OF CONDUCT

Memphis Mission of Mercy aims to conduct mission work for the poor with the following goals:

    • Dignity for all people
    • Quality medical and surgical care in accordance with our training and profession
    • Mutual respect across culture lines
    • Safety for volunteers and patients

In order to accomplish the above, we ask that each of our volunteers agrees to provide care with the same goals. In addition, we have found that specific behaviors are helpful and harmful in achieving or not achieving a successful mission.

We ask that you agree with the following:

    • Never leave the group without informing the team leader.
    • Respect the culture and the people of the host country. Reserve any judgements or comments on what you observe for yourself. If there is a problem, please only discuss with team leader.
    • Assume the best and see the best in others
    • Treat all fellow volunteers, local staff and leadership with respect and kindness.
    • All surgical cases move forward and begin only when all members of the team (Circulator, Anesthesia, Surgeon, OR tech) are ready, prepared and comfortable with the plan of care
    • All residents or medical students will perform any surgical task ONLY WITH the direct intraoperative supervision of his/her attending who must be scrubbed in throughout the duration of the case
    • There will be NO RESEARCH or OUTCOMES studies performed on or with Memphis Mission of Mercy patients, unless approved by IRB and Memphis Mission of Mercy Board of Directors and host organization and medical director
    • Please do not leave your assigned area at the hospital without letting your team leader or other team member know.
      • While alcohol is not prohibited from the mission week, if any individual is deemed unsafe due to intoxication, or unable to conduct themselves professionally while partaking, he or she may be dismissed from the mission, the mission site, and/or team at the volunteer’s expense.

All this we ask, so that we can focus on the care of the people in front of us, and enjoy the company of the people around us.

If we help one person, then we have achieved a goal most worthy.
