Participant Information Sheet
Affective Analysis of Singing with Machine Learning
You are invited to take part in a research study. Please carefully read through this information sheet before proceeding with participating. If you have any questions or queries, please feel free to contact the main researcher or supervisor listed at the end of this information sheet.
What is the purpose of the study?
This research aims to explore the efficacy of artificial intelligence in identifying emotions of vocals of songs without instruments.
Do I have to take part?
No, this study is completely voluntary to participate in and you do not have to take part if you do not wish to.
What will happen to me if I take part?
First, you will be asked to input your gender and nationality/accent. If you are British, we will ask for your accent. You will be asked to sing a short lyric from a song eight times in different emotions. It will take approximately 15-30 minutes of your time. Your audio recordings will be captured and recorded.
What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?
There are no disadvantages or risks to taking part in the research.
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
Whilst there is no monetary benefit, you will be contributing to the development of artificial intelligence for emotion identification.
What if something goes wrong?
If you have any complaints, please contact Kurt Allman, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Business & Enterprise, University of Chester, k.allman@chester.ac.uk
Will my taking part in the study be kept confidential?
Yes, all data collected will be kept strictly confidential and only the main researcher and supervisor will have access to the data.
What will happen to the results of the research study?
The results of the study will be used in an MSc final project dissertation. No raw data will be used in the dissertation.
Who is organising the research?
This research is being conducted as part of a MSc Applied Artificial Intelligence within the School of Computer and Engineering Sciences at the University of Chester. This study is organised with supervision from the department, by Emma Hughes, an MSc student.
Who may I contact for further information?
For more information, please contact:
Main researcher: Emma Hughes, 2103141@chester.ac.uk
