Schedule your appointment for our October 18th, 2025, Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off event at the Tompkins County Recycling and Solid Waste Center.
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is material that must be handled and disposed of properly due to dangers it poses to our health and the environment. To accommodate our community's needs for a safe method of disposal, the Tompkins County Department of Recycling and Materials Management offers special Drop-Off events at our permanent location to accept HHW from Tompkins County residents and qualified businesses and organizations that are Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators (CESQG).

PLEASE NOTE: Residents must have a valid permit and have an appointment to attend an event. You will need your solid waste permit number. Only one sign-up per household per Drop Off event.

If I bring latex paint, it will be more than 1/3 of a gallon per container. If less, paint should be dried out with an absorbent material such as kitty litter, mixed, and allowed to dry. The material can then be disposed of in household trash with lid left off. NO empty or dried up paint cans will be accepted as HHW.*

Unacceptable items list:
- Ammunition, explosives, and firearms
- Asbestos
- Undamaged Batteries (dispose of alkaline batteries in trash, rechargeable batteries can be brought to the electronics drop off area)
- Vehicle Batteries
- Cans with dried paint
- Empty containers. Dispose of empty containers from HHW as garbage.
- Propane tanks and other gas cylinders (Empty aerosol and propane tanks can be recycled at the Recycling and Solid Waste Center.)
- Medical waste, including syringes, prescription medication and other controlled substances
- Radioactive waste, including ion chamber smoke detectors
- Containers larger than a 5-gallon pail including 30 & 55-gallon drums

I certify that I am a resident of Tompkins County, New York, and that all of the waste that I have brought to this drop-off program is generated by a household in Tompkins County and is not from any commercial or industrial source. I certify that any used motor oil or antifreeze I have brought is also from a residential source. If these substances are contaminated (with transmission fluid, gasoline, transformer oil, or any other solvents), the contaminant is clearly identified on the container. I waive, release and forever discharge any and all rights and/or claims, and further agree to indemnify and hold harmless Tompkins County, its contractors, sub-contractors, staff, volunteers, Legislators, additional sponsors and contributors for any and all injuries and damages suffered by me that occur during or as a result of utilizing the HHW Drop-off Event.*
