The B35 Project is in the area between Sella Kataragam and Buttala in southern Sri Lanka. On this road, wild elephants are frequently seen begging for food from passing vehicles, and even blocking vehicles until they receive food. On some occasions, vehicle windows are broken and the elephants reach into the vehicle through the broken window searching for food. Even though plenty of food is available for the elephants inside the jungle, getting treats and begging is far easier for these elephants.
Our aim on the B35 Project is to stop this behaviour as it can be disastrous for both the elephants and humans. There have been human fatalities, with numbers unknown (due to lack of information and statistics). There have been fatalities on the elephant side too, with the ingestion of plastic bags, eating "human food" that is unfit for elephants, and being fed with food that causes stomache problems.
Our primary aim is education, as many tourists and locals are unaware that feeding wildlife is against the law, and a fine able offense in Sri Lanka.
