Digital IOSN
  • Indicator of Sedation Need

The Indicator of Sedation Need is a commonly used tool to justify the use of Dental Sedation. It can also be used to determine if sedation should be recommended to the Dental Patient.
  • This tool has been designed to encourage fair access to Dental Sedation. The tool can be used by dentists to help decision-making and by commissioners as a dental conscious sedation services to establish the need in a particular population (reference). This tool is in three parts and uses information about:

    1. Patient's self reported anxiety levels
    2. Medical and behavioural status
    3. Treatment complexity.

The original IOSN tool was designed by Professor Paul Coulthard at the University of Manchester and was developed into a digital tool with permission of the author by Dr Rob Endicott and Dr Toheed Nasir from UKSedation and Traintosedate.

  • Part 1 - Modified Dental Anxiety Scale

How anxious is your patient? Use as part of your Medical History Questionnaire
  • Part 2 - Medical Factors

Health Conditions that can justify the use of sedation or may make dentistry easier for the patient if they were sedated
  • Part 3 - Treatment Complexity

How complex is the Dentistry you are carrying out?
  • In this section we look at how complicated the planned dental treatment is.

This can be subjective, what may be simple for some practitioners may be complex for others but this is about the complexity for the patient as well.

The planned dentistry is split into "types" and the list isn't exhaustive. However if mulitiple treatment categories are planned, e.g. "fillings and perio", "extractions and crown preps" or one treatment type in different quadrants - e.g. "extractions upper left and lower right" they are automatically classed as complex, yeilding a score of 4.

  • You have selected you are doing one treatment type, what is it?

If you are selecting two boxes then you need to change the field above saying you are combinig treatments
  • You have selected one treatment type, if you are doing more than that, change the "Combining Treatment Types" field above to "Yes"
