25 pounds Standard 266 Umbria. This deep, rich clay fires to a beautiful dark brown in an electric kiln, giving a reduction-like effect. It’s smooth, plastic, and great for both throwing and handbuilding. The fine grog makes it an excellent choice for sgraffito work as well.A word of caution—this clay doesn’t like to go too hot. If you take it to a 'hot' cone 6 or beyond, it tends to bloat. Some potters have noticed pinholing with certain opaque glazes, which makes sense. A clay this dark likely has some organic material that burns out during firing, and opaque glazes can be more prone to trapping those tiny off-gassing bubbles. If you’re running into this issue, try firing to cone 5 with a 15-minute hold—this should help smooth things out.Other than that, this is a fantastic clay body, especially when left as an exposed surface.Shrinkage: 11.5% at C/4, 13% at C/6.Absorption: 2.4% at C/4, 1.4% at C/6.
