Instructions
This assessment includes a mix of scaled questions and open-ended prompts to support meaningful reflection and analysis. You'll encounter three types of questions:
1. Board Maturity Scale
Used in select sections to assess how board practices align with the YWCA’s mission, governance responsibilities, representation, and community engagement. This scale encourages reflection on current practices and growth opportunities—there are no “right” answers.
2. Likert Scale (Strongly Disagree → Strongly Agree)
Used to reflect on engagement, meeting preparedness, responsibilities, and board dynamics.
3. Open-Ended Reflection Questions
Included at the end of each section to invite deeper insight, personal observations, or suggestions for improvement.
Board Maturity Scale
Use the following scale as a reference when answering applicable questions throughout the assessment. It is intended to support honest reflection on how the board engages with mission-aligned governance, representation, community connection, and long-term effectiveness.
There are no “right” answers—only a spectrum of growth and opportunity.
In select sections of this assessment, a 6-stage maturity scale is used to help capture where the board currently stands and where growth may be possible. The stages represent increasing levels of intentionality, integration, and shared responsibility across different areas of board practice.
- Limited Awareness - The board continues long-standing practices with limited reflection or alignment with current mission, community needs, or values.
- Emerging Intention - Early conversations or actions are beginning to take shape, but efforts remain inconsistent or exploratory.
- Symbolic Efforts - The board introduces visible or stated efforts, but these are often isolated or not yet embedded in regular practices.
- Intentional Integration - Practices, decisions, and actions increasingly align with the YWCA’s mission, values, and strategic goals.
- Structural Commitment - Systems and policies reflect sustained alignment and reinforce board development, accountability, and mission impact.
- Collective Stewardship - The board models shared responsibility, deep accountability, and public representation of the mission through intentional engagement and leadership.
In sections where the Board Maturity Scale is used, the scale descriptions have been tailored to reflect the theme being assessed. While the stage titles remain consistent throughout, the language may shift slightly to reflect the context of each topic.
