• Thank you for contributing to our bookselling survey. All data we collect will be aggregated and anonymised. We need to know more about our membership, and this survey is the first step in building a longitudinal data set to help us better serve the needs of our members. Each completed survey will be entered into a draw to receive a fully paid registration at the BookPeople National Conference in June. The survey will take 25-30 minutes if you have financial information ready, and much less for bookshop staff. You cannot save your progress in the survey, but if you keep the window open you will not be timed out. Where you do not have an answer, you can still complete the survey. You can also move also move back and forth to amend answers.
  • Demographics

  • We're asking for age information to help us understand the demographics of our survey respondents. Combined with other demographic information, the age of bookshop staff and owners will help us shape services and policy.

  • Stock Turn (Turnover Ratio)

Stock turn is a measure of the number of times inventory is sold in a time period, such as a year. It is calculated using the annual cost of goods sold (COGS), divided by your average value of inventory. You need the average value of your inventory over the past year. If you only measure inventory at stock take, please use that figure, but note that average inventory is the best way to calculate this.
  • Vouchers

  • Staffing & Employment

The number of people working in bookselling is an easily understandable and useful metric. The size of our workforce is an important talking point for both media and government engagement.
  • What's it like to work in a bookshop?

  • Supply

We take all your anecdotal feedback directly to publishers and distributors, but we need a substantial data set to better advocate on your behalf. Please be clear in your comments about rankings so we can best collate your feedback.
