The University of Alaska Fairbanks has been awarded $1,000,000 from the Mellon Foundation to support a cohort of established PhD students who are centering Indigenous knowledge at the core of the arts and humanities and engage in transdisciplinary research.
The grant will support 8 PhD fellowships for 2 years (fall 2025 - summer 2027). Research fellows receive tuition, fees, and insurance coverage as well as a stipend of up to $39,440 per year. In addition, in order to support making transdisciplinary connections and addressing community needs through university-based research, fellows will participate in the following:
- 3 week summer session on the UAF Troth Yeddha campus (2026 and 2027)
- 4 semester-long seminar series (fall 2025, spring 2026, fall 2026, spring 2027)
- Dissemination of research at one international conference (fall 2027)
- 4 graduate level courses (re)designed specifically to meet the needs of the Troth Collective Fellows
Applications are due June 16, 2025. Initial review to check for eligibility will be conducted by July 1. Offers will be made starting July 28. Funding can start as early as Fall 2025.
