Since its founding in 2013, Saving Ourselves Symposium (SOS) has become a highly anticipated community-centered conference that educates and empowers the Black LGBTQIA+ community in the South. Founded and led by a young Black same-gender loving man, SOS is truly the community’s conference, and SAC is honored to have been chosen in 2019 to be the home of this yearly convening. SOS 2025, even in the face of adversity and tumultuous times, will continue the longstanding legacy upon which it was founded, with a theme that prioritizes the values of equity, innovation, and social justice. This conference speaks to the value of life and creates the energy and enthusiasm necessary for action.
This year’s theme, BLACK to the Future: Strategies, Opportunities, Solutions, is a bold call to envision and build the future we deserve—rooted in joy, resilience, and collective liberation. The theme is a call to action that speaks to the critical need to address the syndemics disproportionately impacting Black LGBTQIA+ communities, shifting dynamics among funding and service delivery, and communities directly being impacted by policies that are perpetuating stigma, exclusion, erasure and harm. THIS IS NOT just another conference but a convening for Black Queer Southerners and their allies/co-conspirators to strategize, plan and create our way forward. WE WILL NOT GO BACK! SOS 2025 is a space for disseminating cutting-edge research, sharing promising health practices and strategies and celebrating the culture and creativity of the Black LGBTQIA+ community. While there are many challenges to be addressed, SOS 2025 is also a celebration of resilience, creativity, and a moment to prioritize our need for healing collectively and individually.
