Benefits of Using a Checking Account
- Security: Checking accounts are a safer place to store money than storing cash at home, as the money you deposit in a checking account is insured up to $250,000.
- Convenience: With a checking account, you can more easily cash checks, receive/send money to family and friends, and pay bills. In many cases, you can set up your checking account with direct deposit or automated bill pay. Some bank accounts will even get you early access to your paycheck.
- Avoid fees/expenses: Without a checking account, banks or other institutions often charge fees to cash a check. You can cash checks for free with your bank once you have an account. Additionally, by paying bills with your checking account online or via written check, you can avoid having to pay for money orders or physically delivering dues in cash.

Here are a couple vetted service providers offering no-fee online checking accounts:
- Chime Online Checking Account - An online, mobile-friendly checking account with a debit card and access to a large network of fee-free ATMs. They also offer early access to your paycheck and will spot you up to $200 if you overdraft without charging any overdraft fee.
- Dora Mobile Banking - A bilingual checking account for Spanish speakers in a mobile app.
