English for High School
South Carolina homeschool law requires you to report Literature and Composition as separate subjects for students in 7th-12th grades, even if your curriculum combines them as "English" or "Language Arts." For compliance, your records and reports should show both "Literature" and "Composition" as separate subjects, regardless of how your curriculum materials are organized.
*Transcripts may list a course as “English 1” to represent both Literature and Composition. However, your personal course descriptions should specify that both components-Literature and Composition-were included in the curriculum.
For Example:
Literature: Course focused on reading and analyzing novels, poetry, and other literary works.
Composition: Course focused on developing writing skills, including essays, research papers, and creative writing.
Letter and Percentage Grades are optional through 8th grade, though we recommend including them.
Progress Reports are required, but give you flexibility to describe your child’s development in a way that fits your educational approach. For more specific feedback, you might use these descriptors:
- Exceeds Expectations (E): Consistently demonstrates advanced understanding and analysis of material.
- Making Consistent Progress (P): Steadily develops skills and meets curriculum goals.
- Needs Further Development (N): Would benefit from additional instruction or practice to strengthen understanding.
