    Board of Directors Application

    for RELAY Next Generation v2.0
  • BOARD CHAIR / BOARD PRESIDENT DESCRIPTION

    • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Serves as the leader of the board, guiding the board’s governance activities and facilitating meetings. The Chair works in partnership with the Executive Director as a strategic thought-partner and acts as the board’s primary liaison with staff. They oversee board meetings and the executive committee, setting agendas and ensuring productive discussions. The Chair also often takes the lead in board member recruitment and onboarding, and in appointing committee chairs.

    • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Prior leadership experience on a nonprofit board or similar body; strong understanding of RELAY Next’s mission and values; excellent communication and facilitation skills; ability to build consensus among diverse members. The Chair should be respected by fellow board members and be adept at strategic planning and organizational oversight.

    • STRATEGIC VALUE: A strong Chair keeps the board focused on mission alignment and strategic goals. This role is crucial for maintaining effective governance and supporting the Executive Director. By providing vision and encouraging each board member’s engagement, the Chair helps drive RELAY Next’s initiatives in STEAM education, mental health, and youth entrepreneurship forward.

  • BOARD VICE CHAIR (VICE PRESIDENT) DESCRIPTION

    • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Acts as the secondary leader of the board, supporting the Board Chair and stepping in as needed. The Vice Chair fills in for the Chair when necessary and may be assigned specific duties or to lead important committees or task forces. This role is often considered a Chair-in-training, helping ensure continuity of leadership.

    • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Strong leadership and organizational skills; experience in governance or heading committees; deep commitment to the mission so they can seamlessly represent the board when the Chair is unavailable. Ideally, the Vice Chair has the capability and willingness to assume the Board Chair role in the future.

    • STRATEGIC VALUE: By providing backup leadership, the Vice Chair ensures that board momentum doesn’t falter if the Chair is absent or during leadership transitions. They might spearhead special initiatives (for example, chairing a Governance Committee to recruit/train new board members or leading a strategic planning effort). In RELAY Next’s context, a Vice Chair deeply versed in the nonprofit’s focus areas can champion key programs (STEAM, mental health, etc.) at the leadership level.

  • BOARD TREASURER DESCRIPTION

    • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Oversees all matters related to the organization’s finances, budgeting, and fiscal health. The Treasurer monitors financial reports, works with staff on budgets, ensures proper financial controls are in place, and typically chairs the Finance Committee. They present financial updates at board meetings and lead the board’s review of financial statements, audits, and compliance with financial policies.

    • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Background in finance, accounting, or business management; familiarity with nonprofit financial standards; detail-oriented and comfortable with numbers. A CPA, CFO, accountant, or finance-savvy business executive would be ideal. Importantly, the individual should be trustworthy and conscientious, as they are a steward of the organization’s assets.

    • STRATEGIC VALUE: A capable Treasurer safeguards RELAY Next’s financial sustainability. This role provides credibility and confidence to donors and funders by ensuring funds are managed prudently and transparently. Especially for a startup nonprofit, the Treasurer’s guidance on budgeting (for programs like afterschool STEAM workshops or mental health counseling sessions) is critical to scaling impact responsibly. The Treasurer also helps the board make informed decisions about fundraising needs and resource allocation for key initiatives (such as literacy programs or technology labs).

  • BOARD SECRETARY DESCRIPTION

    • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for keeping (or overseeing the keeping of) board meeting minutes and official records. The Secretary ensures that board actions are documented and that important documents (bylaws, policies, meeting agendas, and minutes) are organized and archived. They handle official correspondence and notifications (e.g. meeting notices) and often ensure compliance with any governance requirements (such as filing corporate reports or maintaining a schedule of board elections).

    • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail; good understanding of nonprofit governance procedures; effective written communication skills. Experience in administrative roles or knowledge of documentation practices is helpful. The Secretary should also be reliable about attending meetings and keeping track of action items.

    • STRATEGIC VALUE: By maintaining accurate records and ensuring compliance, the Secretary provides institutional memory and legal integrity. This role supports transparency and accountability – critical for a mission-driven organization. For RELAY Next, having meticulous records (e.g., of decisions on program development or partnership agreements) helps in tracking progress and demonstrating responsibility to stakeholders (including community members and grant makers).

  • EDUCATION & STEAM PROGRAMS ADVOCATE DESCRIPTION

    • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Serves as the board’s expert on education programs, ensuring RELAY Next’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) curricula and tutoring/mentoring initiatives are pedagogically sound and effective. This member advises on curriculum development, academic partnerships (e.g. with schools or educational institutions), and measures of educational outcomes (like improvements in literacy or STEAM skills). They might lead a Programs Committee to evaluate and enhance afterschool, summer, or homeschool offerings.

    • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A background in K-12 or higher education, such as a current or former teacher, school administrator, or education nonprofit leader. Familiarity with STEAM education is ideal – for example, a science or math educator, or someone who has run technology or arts programs for youth. They should be passionate about innovative teaching methods and closing achievement gaps for underserved students.

    • STRATEGIC VALUE: Education is at the core of RELAY Next’s mission (“Research, Education, Literacy, & Assistance for Youth”). An education advocate on the board ensures that the organization’s academic and literacy initiatives remain high-quality and aligned with school standards. They bring credibility when interacting with schools and parents, help tailor programs to student needs, and keep the board informed about educational trends (such as STEAM learning approaches or literacy interventions). This expertise directly supports RELAY’s goal of equipping youth with enhanced skillsets through life application in learning.

  • YOUTH ADVOCACY & CHILD DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST DESCRIPTION

    • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Champions the perspective of youth and their developmental needs in board decisions. This board member advises on youth engagement strategies, child safety and well-being policies, and helps ensure programs are trauma-informed and developmentally appropriate. They may connect RELAY Next with other youth-serving organizations or social services. Additionally, they advocate for youth voice – possibly suggesting the creation of a Youth Advisory Council so that students can provide input on programs.

    • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Professional experience in youth development, social work, or child advocacy. For example, a leader from a community youth center, a child psychologist, or someone with expertise in afterschool program management. They should understand the challenges faced by underserved youth (poverty, discrimination, academic struggles) and be knowledgeable about resources to support kids’ holistic development.

    • STRATEGIC VALUE: By keeping the well-being of young people at the forefront, this member helps RELAY Next create an environment where “no one feels inadequate” and every child is supported. Their insight ensures that initiatives like mentoring, tutoring, and life skills training truly address the needs of the children. This builds program effectiveness and trust with families. Moreover, having a child advocate on the board signals to the community and funders that RELAY Next prioritizes safe and supportive youth development alongside its educational goals.

  • MENTAL HEALTH & WELLNESS ADVOCATE DESCRIPTION

    • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides expertise on mental health and socio-emotional support, a key pillar of RELAY Next’s mission. This board member guides the integration of mental health awareness, resilience building, and counseling or referral services into programs. They might help develop partnerships with mental health organizations or advise on training mentors to recognize and respond to youth mental health needs. They ensure that promoting emotional well-being is a consistent consideration in program planning (for example, balancing academic push with stress-reduction activities or mindfulness).

    • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A mental health professional or advocate – such as a psychologist, licensed counselor, school social worker, or leader of a mental health nonprofit (especially focused on youth/adolescents). Alternatively, could be an educator with strong background in social-emotional learning (SEL). This person should be knowledgeable about common mental health challenges faced by youths (anxiety, depression, trauma) and passionate about reducing stigma and improving access to support.

    • STRATEGIC VALUE: Youth mental health is as important as their physical health, and this role ensures RELAY Next upholds that value. The Mental Health Advocate on the board helps shape initiatives like mentoring and tutoring in a way that also addresses confidence, teamwork, and coping skills. Their presence adds credibility when seeking grants related to mental health or pitching the program’s holistic approach. Strategically, this perspective helps RELAY Next produce not only academically capable students, but resilient, emotionally healthy young leaders, which can be a key differentiator and point of impact for the nonprofit.

  • COMMUNITY LEADER DESCRIPTION

    • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Acts as a liaison to the broader community and region (Mid-Atlantic) that RELAY Next serves. This board member leverages their community leadership to raise awareness of RELAY Next’s programs among local stakeholders and to build partnerships. They might connect the organization with community centers, faith-based organizations, local government agencies, or civic groups to reach more youth and families. They also ensure the board stays informed about community needs, demographics, and public initiatives that affect youth (such as school district changes or local youth policies).

    • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A respected community figure or civic leader in the Mid-Atlantic area. This could be a leader of a neighborhood association, a local government official, someone involved in regional youth coalitions, or a known advocate for underserved populations. They should have a strong network and a pulse on community issues, plus a commitment to volunteerism and civic engagement.

    • STRATEGIC VALUE: RELAY Next’s success depends on trust and collaboration within the communities it operates. A community leader on the board grounds the organization in the real-world context of the youth it serves, ensuring programming is culturally relevant and accessible. They can open doors to joint initiatives (like community STEAM fairs, library literacy events, or mental health awareness campaigns) and help recruit participants and volunteers from target neighborhoods. Their presence also reinforces RELAY’s image as a community-driven organization, which is beneficial for local fundraising and long-term sustainability.

  • TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION ADVISOR DESCRIPTION

    • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Brings knowledge of the technology sector and innovation to the board. This member advises on incorporating technology and digital tools in RELAY Next’s STEAM programs (for example, helping to set up computer labs, coding workshops, or robotics clubs). They stay abreast of tech trends and can counsel on subjects like digital literacy, IT infrastructure for the nonprofit, or data security. If RELAY Next develops any information technology components (like an online learning platform or a community TV production as mentioned in its history), this board member guides those projects.

    • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A professional from the tech industry or with a STEAM background – such as a software engineer, technology entrepreneur, or IT manager. Experience with STEAM education or tech for good (e.g., someone who has volunteered in code education for kids) is a big plus. They should be enthusiastic about how technology and innovation can empower youth and improve operational efficiency.

    • STRATEGIC VALUE: Technology is integral to STEAM education and to modern nonprofit operations. This advisor ensures RELAY Next remains current and forward-thinking, enhancing its appeal to students who are naturally drawn to tech. Strategically, they can help the organization identify valuable resources (like getting donated laptops or software) and evaluate new program ideas (such as an “information technology” initiative, echoing RELAY’s earlier focus on media/IT). Their connections in the tech world might also lead to mentorship opportunities, sponsorships, or volunteers with technical skills, all of which amplify RELAY’s impact in preparing innovative future leaders.

  • BUSINESS & ENTREPRENEURSHIP MENTOR DESCRIPTION

     • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Guides the board on matters of business education and entrepreneurship mentorship, which are part of RELAY Next’s mission to inspire future business owners. This member helps shape programs that teach financial literacy, leadership, and entrepreneurship skills to youth (e.g., startup incubator workshops for teens or business plan competitions). They can mentor the Executive Director on strategic planning and organizational growth from a business perspective. Additionally, they may connect RELAY Next with local businesses for partnerships, sponsorships, or internship opportunities for students.

    • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: An entrepreneur, business owner, or corporate leader – ideally someone who has experience mentoring young entrepreneurs or involvement in youth entrepreneurship programs. MBA graduates, small business incubator managers, or executives from companies that invest in community education would fit well. They should have solid strategic thinking abilities and a desire to “expand young people’s vision beyond the boundaries of education to the possibilities of business ownership”.

    • STRATEGIC VALUE: This role infuses a practical business mindset into the nonprofit. For the youth, it means RELAY Next’s curriculum doesn’t just focus on academic success, but also economic empowerment and real-world skills (like budgeting, creativity, and initiative). From the board’s perspective, a business mentor helps ensure the organization itself is run efficiently and sustainably. They bring valuable networks in the business community that can lead to funding, in-kind support, or expertise. In the long run, their influence helps RELAY Next produce graduates who are not only college-ready but also entrepreneurial and financially literate, aligning with the goal of fostering self-sufficiency in underprivileged youth.

  • FUNDRAISING & PHILANTHROPY CHAMPION DESCRIPTION

    • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Leads the board’s efforts in fundraising, donor relations, and philanthropy strategy. This board member often chairs a Development Committee, coordinating events, campaigns, and donor outreach. They work closely with staff to set fundraising goals and identify revenue opportunities (grants, corporate sponsorships, individual donors). During board meetings, they report on fundraising progress and push all board members to fulfill their fundraising roles (through personal giving, introductions, or event participation).

    • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in fundraising or philanthropy is key – for instance, a development professional, a major donor or philanthropist, or someone with board experience in successful fundraising campaigns. Strong networking and communication skills are crucial, as is enthusiasm for the mission that can inspire others to give. Knowledge of grant writing or corporate social responsibility programs is a plus.

    • STRATEGIC VALUE: Financial resources are the lifeblood of a nonprofit startup. A philanthropy champion helps ensure RELAY Next has the funds needed to operate and grow its programs (whether it’s buying books for literacy programs or funding mental health workshops). This role injects a culture of philanthropy into the board, reminding members that part of their duty is to secure resources. Strategically, this member’s connections to foundations, charities, or wealthy individuals can open significant funding streams. They can also help shape a long-term fundraising plan, so RELAY Next can expand from serving one community to many across the Mid-Atlantic.

  • EQUITY ADVOCATE

    • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Ensures that diversity principles are woven into all aspects of the board’s work and the organization’s programs. This member actively voices considerations around reaching underrepresented youth, creating an inclusive environment, and eliminating biases in program design or hiring.

    • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: An individual who has deep experience with diverse communities as RELAY Next aims to serve all – for example, a leader from an underserved community, a first-generation college graduate, or a professional with a background in diversity advocacy. They should be knowledgeable about systemic challenges that underserved groups face and passionate about uniting communities rather than dividing them.

    • STRATEGIC VALUE: A board that truly reflects its community will make better decisions and earn greater trust. This advocate helps RELAY Next stay true to its value of fostering diversity. Their input can improve outreach (ensuring, for instance, that recruitment of students and volunteers reaches all segments of every community) and program relevance. Strategically, showing a commitment to diversity can also attract funding, as many grant makers prioritize equity. Moreover, this role helps build an organizational culture where every board member and staff feel their perspective is valued – which ultimately benefits the youth with a richer, more empathetic support system.

  • Nonprofit Legal/Compliance Advisor

    • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides guidance on legal, ethical, and compliance matters for the board. While not always a separate board seat dedicated to mission areas, having access to legal expertise is invaluable. This individual will review governance policies, ensures bylaws and regulations (state and federal nonprofit laws) are followed, and advises on risk management (e.g., liability issues for youth programs, volunteer waivers, safety compliance). They may not need to be a voting director (they could serve in an advisory capacity or as a board member-at-large who also happens to be an attorney).

    • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A licensed attorney or compliance professional, ideally with knowledge of nonprofit law or youth-serving organizations’ regulations. Could be pro bono counsel or a board member who is a lawyer by trade.

    • STRATEGIC VALUE: Proper governance and legal compliance are foundational to RELAY Next’s success and credibility. This advisor safeguards the organization from legal missteps and frees the board to focus on mission strategy. They ensure that enthusiasm for programs (like starting a new maker-space or launching a mentorship initiative) is matched with attention to permissions, insurance, and privacy policies, keeping RELAY Next’s operations above reproach.
