BUSINESS & ENTREPRENEURSHIP MENTOR DESCRIPTION
• KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Guides the board on matters of business education and entrepreneurship mentorship, which are part of RELAY Next’s mission to inspire future business owners. This member helps shape programs that teach financial literacy, leadership, and entrepreneurship skills to youth (e.g., startup incubator workshops for teens or business plan competitions). They can mentor the Executive Director on strategic planning and organizational growth from a business perspective. Additionally, they may connect RELAY Next with local businesses for partnerships, sponsorships, or internship opportunities for students.
• DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: An entrepreneur, business owner, or corporate leader – ideally someone who has experience mentoring young entrepreneurs or involvement in youth entrepreneurship programs. MBA graduates, small business incubator managers, or executives from companies that invest in community education would fit well. They should have solid strategic thinking abilities and a desire to “expand young people’s vision beyond the boundaries of education to the possibilities of business ownership”.
• STRATEGIC VALUE: This role infuses a practical business mindset into the nonprofit. For the youth, it means RELAY Next’s curriculum doesn’t just focus on academic success, but also economic empowerment and real-world skills (like budgeting, creativity, and initiative). From the board’s perspective, a business mentor helps ensure the organization itself is run efficiently and sustainably. They bring valuable networks in the business community that can lead to funding, in-kind support, or expertise. In the long run, their influence helps RELAY Next produce graduates who are not only college-ready but also entrepreneurial and financially literate, aligning with the goal of fostering self-sufficiency in underprivileged youth.
