  • Introduction

    Dear applicant,

    Welcome to the online application form for ESAIC Exchange Programmes.

    The ESAIC Exchange Programmes are open to ESAIC European residents and specialists who are interested and are successful in securing a scholarship, educational grant, or can afford their travel expenses, accommodation etc. Successful candidates will be able to run their exchange programme in 2027.

    Here is some relevant information to know before submitting your application:

    Only ESAIC Active or Trainee Members of the Society in good standing can apply. We therefore ask you to check the status of your membership by accessing your myESAIC profile. Please download and use the accompanying Guide and Checklist to ensure your application complies with all selection criteria.

    All sections must be answered and requested documentation uploaded together with the application form. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed by the selection committee and thus automatically rejected.

  • Important disclaimer

    Your application to the ESAIC Exchange Programme is a binding process.

    We expect full commitment to the Programme from selected applicants. 
    Unjustified withdrawals from the Programme after 01 September 2026 will result in exclusion from future participation.

    If, for any reason, after your application has been submitted, it becomes clear that you cannot commit to the Programme, inform the ESAIC Headquarters immediately.

    If you must withdraw your application after the 01 Sep. deadline, you will be expected to submit:
    1) A letter explaining the reasons for your withdrawal;
    2) Supporting attachment:
    a. An official document supporting the reason for your withdrawal (e.g., visa refusal, medical interdiction of travel,...);
    or
    b. A signed letter from your Head of Department acknowledging this withdrawal. 

    Please provide below the details of your Head of Department (the same person who signs your reference letter). Upon the submission of the application, they will be made aware of this process.

    The ESAIC is proud to announce its collaboration with the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (EACTAIC) in providing high-quality training and education to prepare young professionals working in the field of cardiothoracic and vascular anaesthesia.

    We invite all residents and specialists who are interested in perioperative care of patients undergoing cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery and related interventional procedures to visit the EACTAIC Exchange Programme Webpage.

  • * Following the Common European Framework of Reference, indicate your level of proficiency next to each language, with A1 being the lowest and C2/Native being the highest. Make sure your level of fluency in the language(s) matches the requests of the preferred host centre(s). The ESAIC is not held responsible for the verification of the language level. 

    IMPORTANT - Please be aware that medical registration with the GMC in the UK requires you to have an I.E.L.T.S certification and a pass score of 7.5 or above or an Occupational English Test grade B or above.

    ESAIC Host Centres can offer "Hands-on" training, "Observership" training, or both. Please refer to the Host Centres list to identify which centre best meets your educational needs.

    Please note that in special circumstances, you may have to choose between having an observer status and selecting an alternative host country.

  • IMPORTANT

    • All applicants for the Exchange Programme should take into account that additional administrative procedures may be required to visit the Host Centres.
    • Due to significant GMC and Royal College of Anaesthetists Medical Training Initiative's complex restrictions, the Exchange Programme Committee strongly invites applicants to consider this aspect when selecting the preferred centre.
    • More information on acceptance to a UK host centre can be found in the Application Guide and Checklist.
    • Please note that being pregnant may prevent you to practice or enter the operating theatre (depending on the country).

  • Personal profile (motivation letter/personal statement):

    Write a max 300 words profile of yourself.

    List and quantify any past activities that demonstrate how you have contributed to your department. For example, activity in management; quality improvement; leading by example.

    Mention any relevant postgraduate diplomas.

    Make sure to clearly explain why are you applying. Describe how this Exchange Programme would help you meet your aspirations, assist your personal developments, and enhance your current environment.

    Include a brief description of your career aims over the next 5 years.

    Two independent references are required.
    One should be written by a clinician who has been a direct teacher of the applicant. The other must come from the Head of Department and clearly state that the applicant has approval to take the time to participate in the exchange.
