'Be A Good Neighbor' Checklist

Together with the Winkler & Morden Community Foundations, PVLIP (Pembina Valley Local Immigration Partnership) has developed the following list of practical ideas on how to 'Pay It forward' and 'Be A Good Neighbor'.

Instructions:

Review each of the below 'Be A Good Neighbour' ideas.

Check which ones you did (or tried). Multiple options include non-verbal, verbal, written and actionable ideas.

The Winkler and Morden Community Foundations will use the results of this checklist to provide feedback for future events.

All responses are confidential and not traceable.

We all have opportunity to show kindness to our neighbours whether that is the person who lives next door, your neighbour in the office, or your neighbour in the store checkout line. Community starts next door and together we can be Neighbours helping Neighbours!

How will YOU Pay It Forward this May?

Think about your workplace, your family, or your friends, and how you can impact the community around you with kindness. We all have different areas of influence: different fields of work, different neighbours, and different hobbies. We have different opportunities to notice and extend acts of kindness.

NON-VERBAL IDEAS How to Be A Good Neighbor:

Wave and smile at the people you pass
Use chalk to write kind messages on the sidewalk where others walk or ride bike
Add books to a Little Free Library
Pay for the order behind you in the drive through line
Buy a potted plant for a neighbor
Leave a generous tip for your server at the local restaurant
Let someone go ahead of you in the grocery store line
Drop some canned goods off at the food cupboard
Return a shopping cart for someone at the store
Add Google Translate toggle to your website
Visit an Ethnic Restaurant
Visit a newcomer business
Review wwwpvlip.ca Diversity Calendar and attend/ acknowledge a cultural event
Review the 94 Calls to Action and commit to implementing one
Attend an Indigenous led event, celebration, and/ or cultural learning opportunity

VERBAL IDEAS - How to Be A Good Neighbor:

Check in with a neighbor you have not seen in awhile
Invite a new neighbor over for tea or coffee
Share a skill –teach a neighbour how to bake or garden
Thank your garbadge/ recycling collectors
Leave a small treat on your co-workers desk
Learn the name of someone you see often in your neighborhood
Visit the brand new neighbor on your street
Express gratitude to the drive through order staff for their customer service
Offer a ride to someone who does not have transportation
Make an effort to welcome new staff at your workplace
Initiate a conversation with a newcomer on what makes them 'feel at home'
Initiate a conversation at a community garden on what others are planting/ growing
Invite someone to watch a sporting event with you
Learn to say 'Hi - How are you?" in a foreign language of a co-worker/ new neighbor
Learn about how someone came to live in your community, share your story too

Leave a small thankyou note at your favorite shop or cafe
Leave a cheerful note on a neighbor's doorstep

Send a thank you card to an organization that has impacted your life (hospital, fire, police, counsellor, resource center, library, teachers, Regional Connections, etc)
Write a welcome message in a foreign language to a newcomer in your neighborhood/ workplace
