Interested in becoming a judge for AVMA’s Animal Welfare Assessment Contest® (AWJAC)? Apply below for consideration for the two annual contests.

AWJAC is an educational tool for enhancing understanding and awareness of welfare issues affecting animals used for human purposes (e.g., research, agriculture, entertainment, companionship) open to participation by veterinary, undergraduate, and graduate students. A limited number of spots are available for member veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and those who have completed postgraduate studies (e.g., M.S., PhD) to participate in a non-competitive capacity.

AWJAC relies on hypothetical, realistic computer-viewed scenarios and/or an onsite scenario with live animals containing performance, health, physiologic and behavioral data. These are evaluated by students and judges to determine which facility has a higher level of welfare. Students then present their rationale orally to judges with expertise in animal welfare science and specific knowledge of the species they are judging.

The fall contest takes place in person at an AVMA-accredited university (judge travel expenses are covered), while the spring contest is hosted virtually. Judges receive an honorarium for each contest.
