  • Orcas Talks Money - Standalone Workshops

    The Orcas Community Resource Center offers “Orcas Talks Money”—a new series of practical financial education workshops at the Orcas Public Library!

    Different from our comprehensive Orcas Money Smart program, these hour and a half, accessible standalone sessions let you pick and choose the topics that are most relevant to your life and goals.

    Whether you're looking to better understand budgeting, credit, savings, or something else—there’s something for everyone.

  • IMPORTANT DETAILS

    • Instructors will engage confidentially and compassionately with the topics at hand.
    • Snacks and drinks will be provided! 
    • Each class is offered twice—one weekday evening and one weekend morning—to accommodate a variety of schedules.
  • Class #1: YOUR SPENDING AND SAVINGS

    Build a budget that works for you to save for the long term.
     
    In this session, you will practice tracking your income and expenses and workshop ways to increase income and decrease expenses. Gain an understanding of why saving is important and where to save your money, come away with a personalized spending and saving plan. If you've never budgeted before, or the idea of a budget and saving money fills you with anxiety, instructors will be sensitive to your individual comfort level in a confidential setting.
  • Class #2: MAKING HOUSING DECISIONS

    Strategies for finding sound housing for your family.
     
    Explore what safe and secure housing can mean on Orcas and the mainland United States. You will gain the confidence to estimate what kind of housing is affordable for you, and come away with a plan for your future. Expand your knowledge of mortgages, assistance programs, rental agreements, home and renter's insurance, and your rights and responsibilities.
  • Class #3: MANAGING DEBT & CREDIT CARDS

    Gain control over your debts. Understand credit cards and how they work. 

    This session will equip you with the knowledge to safely use debt as a tool to achieve your goals. Learn about the the importance of comparing credit cards and analyze sample credit card statements. You will explore strategies to manage your debt obligations, pay down your debts, and learn about the different kinds of debts. Instructors will facilitate confidential discussions where participants can share ideas and encourage one another to manage debts constructively.
  • Class #4: CREDIT REPORTS & SCORES

    Learn how you can raise your credit score and analyze your credit reports.
     
    In this session, you will discover how your credit report is different from your credit score and why they matter. Find out what factors impact your score the most, and how to get and review your credit reports and scores. Participate in workshops where you will plan to protect against fraud and identity theft, build a productive credit history, and increase your credit score.
  • Class #5: GROWING ASSETS FOR YOUR FUTURE

    Accrue assets that achieve compounding growth over time. 
     
    Take the steps to build your financial future! This session will explain assets, liabilities, equity, and net worth. You will come away with a robust understanding about why a productive asset-building strategy can improve your financial stability and benefit your community. Instructors will faciliate workshops and discussions around building investment-grade assets like stocks, bonds, and real estate, relating these to their relationship with liabilities like loans and credit.
    NOTE: Instructors will not give financial advice like telling you what stocks to buy.
