  • The Bat Boy/Bat Girl is a crucial part of the OC Riptide. They serve a vital role in helping our players achieve success on the field, assisting the umpires in maintaining a good pace of play and providing the fans with memorable experiences.

    Are you up for the challenge?

    This job is not for everyone – The Bat Boy/Bat Girl position is a demanding job requiring stamina, focus, attention to detail and a positive attitude. Every day holds a unique experience often with plenty of responsibilities that other kids of the same age do not get.

    Please Note: Bat Boys/Girls may see and hear things from college aged baseball players that may be inappropriate for children. As much as the coaches and staff promote a professional atmosphere with the utmost decorum, baseball is an emotional game and baseball players may say things in frustration that may be inappropriate for children. Prospective applicants and their parents must be aware that these things may occur, and should consider this prior to applying.

  •  Duties Include:

    • Work closely with the OC Riptide team equipment manager to ensure players’ needs are met.
    • Retrieving baseball bats, protective gear, etc. after players reach base on walks, hit by pitch, batted balls into play, etc.
    • Retrieve foul balls that stay on the playing surface.
    • Replenish home plate umpire with baseballs when requested.
    • Run out water to umpires when requested.
    • Other tasks that may be assigned by the Team Equipment Manager

    Time commitment of four (4) hours on game days. 45 minutes before start of game and 30 minutes or less after to assist Equipment Manager with post-game duties.

     Requirements:

    • Boys and girls must be nine years or older by June 1, 2025
    • Available for a minimum of 75% (18 out of 27) of all home games from June – July.
    • Should the OC Riptide host post-season games, available 7/29-30 and August 1-3.
    • Permitted to work 4 or more hours and games that last past 10 pm
    • Available to work nights, weekends and holidays.
    • Available to work in adverse weather conditions; warm at start of the game but chilly when the sun goes down.
    • Parents must sign a Likeness Agreement authorizing the use of photographs and other media used during the performance of the applicants duties.
    • Applicants must be available for the entirety of games in which you are selected. Arrival time is 45 minutes prior to the first pitch and must be available for the duration of the game.
    • Line up with the team on the baseline and remain standing still during the National Anthem.
    • Wearing athletic shoes, white baseball pants and a batting helmet. The batting helmet must remain on at all times when on the field or in the dugout. (Exception: during the playing of the National Anthem.)

     Preferred Skills:

    • Play Little League/Pony/Travel baseball or softball
    • Have great baseball knowledge to understand the flow of the game.
    • Initiative and has a hardworking, positive attitude.
    • Assist the players and coaches, and ultimately, help speed up the game.

    Safety is the top priority. A Bat Boy or Bat Girl must:

    1. Stay engaged in the game.
    2. Wear a helmet at all times – in the dugout and on the field.
    3. Remain in the dugout during the game until the game is halted or the umpire calls “time.”
    4. Go on the field only to retrieve bats and gear, track down foul balls, deliver water to umpires, etc.
    5. NOT stand on the steps of the dugout or in the netting opening during the game.
    6. NOT distract players in the dugout. They have a job to do and so do you.
    7. Keep his or her cell phone in a backpack unless there is an emergency.

  • The OC Riptide has a bat retrieval dog that will serve as our bat girl on batted balls into play. (She does not retrieve bats on walks, hit by pitch or strikeouts.) She will be around the players, coaches and staff and in close proximity to the dugout along with picking up baseball bats.

    NOTE: THIS FORM INCLUDES A RELEASE OF LIABILITY

    Since working within sports can be inherently dangerous, the Orange County Riptide requires that all Bat Boys/Bat Girls and their parents/guardians to assume all risks associated with working around and during a live baseball game by signing this general release.

    For and in consideration of my child's participation in the Orange County Riptide Bat Boy/Bat Girl Program, I hereby voluntarily release, discharge, waive and relinquish any and all claims or actions for damages for personal injury, permanent disability, death, or property damage which my child may here after accrue to me, as a result of their participation in Bat Boy/Bat Girl activities and while at the facility or for any other reason.

    This release is intended to discharge, in advance, Orange County Riptide Baseball Club, it’s officers, employees and agents, and the owners and maintainers of any facility used for baseball practice or games, from any and all liability arising out of or connected in any way with my child's participation in Bat Boy/Bat Girl activities, even though that liability may arise out of negligence or carelessness on the part of the Orange County Riptide Baseball Club, its officers, agents or employees, or the owners or maintainers of any facility used by the Orange County Riptide Baseball Club for baseball games.

    In case of an emergency, I hereby authorize my child to be treated by Certified Emergency Personnel. (i.e. EMT, First Responder, E.R., Physician, etc.)

    I further understand that serious accidents may occur during a baseball game, (baseball bats and balls may leave the playing field) and that serious personal injuries, death or property damage are a consequence thereof. Knowing the risks, my child has voluntarily applied for to participate in this program and thereby agree to assume those risks to release and hold harmless the Orange County Riptide Baseball Club, its officers, employees or agents, or the owners or maintainers of any facility used by the Orange County Riptide Baseball Club for baseball practice or games, who (through negligence or carelessness) might otherwise be liable to my child, me (or my heirs or assigns) for damages.

    I further understand and agree that this release, discharge, waiver, and assumption of risk is to be binding on me, my child and my heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns.

    I further agree to indemnify and to hold harmless Orange County Riptide Baseball Club, its officers, employees and agents, or the owners or maintainers of any facility used by the Orange County Riptide Baseball Club for baseball practices or activities, for any loss, liability damage, cost or expense which may incur as a result of any injury or property damage my child may sustain while participating in the program.

    I agree to comply with the program’s stated and customary terms and conditions for participation according to the Orange County Riptide Baseball Club. If I observe any significant change with regards to my child's readiness for participation in the Bat Boy/Bat Girl program, I will remove my child from the program immediately.

    I have read this Informed Consent/General Release, fully understanding its terms, that I give up substantial rights by signing it, and sign it voluntarily.

    I hereby acknowledge that the information given above is accurate. I give permission to the OC Riptide for the use of my child's photographs that are taken by staff in order to use for social media and general marketing materials.
