  • Calhoun County Lead Paint Hazard Awareness

Over 45,000 homes in Calhoun County and over 80% of the 23,650 housing units in the City of Battle Creek were built before lead paint was banned in 1978—leaving Calhoun County children at significant risk of lead poisoning. However, 2022 Kids Count data shows that only 31.9% of children ages 1-2 were tested for lead in their blood.  Calhoun County Health Department data shows that less than 20% of Calhoun County children under 6 years old are tested for lead, despite Calhoun County having one of the highest rates of children with elevated lead levels in their blood statewide. Children’s growing bodies and nervous systems absorb more lead than adults, making them at a significantly higher risk of nervous system and kidney damage, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, decreased intelligence, speech, language, and behavior problems, and more. If lead exposure is high enough, it can even lead to death. The City of Battle Creek and greater Calhoun County is working towards increasing blood lead testing efforts to decrease the harmful impacts of lead-based paint exposure.
  • With this in mind, we ask that you take this brief survey to help us understand the barriers to blood lead testing.

Please complete this survey to the best of your ability. If you are unsure of an answer, you may move on to the next question.
