Job Summary:
As a Lifeguard, you will be responsible for monitoring pool activities, enforcing safety rules, performing rescues when necessary, and administering first aid or CPR as needed. You will maintain a safe, clean, and enjoyable swimming environment, working with a team to ensure the highest standards of safety and service.
*Lifeguard certification is available through the Aquatics Department, if necessary.*
Key Responsibilities:
- Pool Surveillance: Constantly monitor the pool and surrounding areas to ensure the safety of all swimmers. Remain alert and vigilant at all times to identify any potential hazards, accidents, or risky behaviors.
- Rescue Operations: Respond immediately to emergency situations, performing rescues and providing necessary first aid or CPR when required. Ensure that rescue equipment is easily accessible and in good working condition.
- Safety Rule Enforcement: Enforce all pool safety rules and regulations, including those related to pool behavior, diving, and use of equipment. Prevent unsafe behaviors and educate swimmers on proper pool etiquette.
- Emergency Response: Be prepared to act in case of accidents, injuries, or medical emergencies. Follow emergency procedures, including calling emergency services when needed, and assist in providing care until help arrives.
- First Aid & CPR: Administer first aid and CPR as necessary, using current techniques and protocols. Maintain up-to-date certifications in first aid, CPR, and other required lifeguard training.
- Monitor Pool Conditions: Regularly inspect the pool area, ensuring that it is clean, safe, and free of hazards. Report any unsafe conditions (e.g., faulty
- equipment, slippery surfaces) to supervisors for immediate attention.
Maintain Equipment: Ensure that rescue equipment such as life jackets, rescue tubes, backboards, and first aid kits are in good working condition and readily available.
- Customer Service: Provide excellent customer service by interacting with pool patrons in a friendly, professional manner. Answer questions about pool rules, programs, and safety practices. Maintain a positive, welcoming atmosphere.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of incidents, accidents, or rescues that occur during your shift. Report any concerns, accidents, or maintenance issues to management.
- Team Collaboration: Work as part of a team with other lifeguards, pool staff, and management to ensure smooth operations. Participate in staff meetings, training, and in-service sessions to stay informed about safety procedures.
- Pool Cleanliness & Maintenance: Assist with maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the pool area, including picking up litter, checking pool chemicals, and ensuring the pool deck and surrounding areas are safe and free from debris.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Some positions may require completion of a lifeguard certification program prior to employment.
- Certifications: Current certification in Lifeguard Training (American Red Cross, YMCA, or equivalent). Certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid is required. Lifeguard Instructor certification is a plus.
- Experience: Previous lifeguard experience is preferred but not required. Training will be provided for qualified candidates who meet certification requirements.
- Physical Fitness: Must be in good physical condition with the ability to swim, remain alert, and perform rescues. Lifeguards must be able to swim a certain distance and demonstrate water safety techniques as part of the hiring process.
- Skills & Knowledge: Knowledge of swimming pool safety rules, basic first aid, CPR, and emergency response procedures. Strong observation and communication skills to effectively monitor swimmers and enforce safety rules.
- Communication Skills: Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with swimmers, patrons, and other staff members. Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and efficiently.
- Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and collaborate with other lifeguards, supervisors, and management.
Additional Skills (Preferred):
Ability to handle emergency situations and perform rescues quickly and safely.
Knowledge of aquatic facility maintenance and general pool operations.
Bilingual or multilingual skills are a plus in diverse communities.
Working Conditions:
- Lifeguards will work in an indoor pool setting.
- Work hours may include weekends, holidays, evenings, and early mornings, depending on pool schedule and operations.
