1. PURPOSE
Volunteers are vital to the success of Capital Pride / Fierté dans la Capitale’s events and festivals.They
participate in many aspects of festival planning and execution, including in-person events, behind the
scenes, and online activities.
Volunteers interact with other volunteers, festival goers, artists, and festival partners in a variety of
ways and as such they play an important role in contributing to a festival that promotes the principles
of equity, diversity and inclusion.
Capital Pride / Fierté dans la Capitale is committed to preventing harassment by providing all
volunteers with a common understanding of appropriate and expected behaviour, by supporting
initiatives to maintain a respectful festival environment, and by helping volunteers identify and use the
available resources to assist them when facing potential harassment situations.
2. EXECUTION
As a requirement of volunteering, the following code of conduct must be agreed to. The Executive
Director will ensure that all volunteers agree to the code of conduct and will keep a copy of all signed
agreements.
3. CODE OF CONDUCT
3.1. INTRODUCTION
Pride celebrations exist to promote the values of equity, diversity and inclusion through events and
within communities across Canada and throughout the world, emphasizing the particular realities of
members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
Volunteers play an important role in contributing to events and festivals that promote the principles of
equity, diversity, and inclusion. As such, all Capital Pride / Fierté dans la Capitale Volunteers are
expected to participate in creating environments that promote equity, diversity, and inclusion and that
are free of discrimination and harassment.
In order to volunteer with Capital Pride / Fierté dans la Capitale during its events or one of its festivals,
volunteers must review and agree to this Code of Conduct.
3.2. GENERAL EXPECTATIONS
Capital Pride / Fierté dans la Capitale’s volunteers shall:
● Act with fairness, honesty, integrity, and openness, while promoting the values of equity,
diversity, and inclusion at all times.
● Strive to provide a positive experience for all event attendees by agreeing to:
○ Behave in a manner consistent with the celebration of Pride and positive value of
diversity in the Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, queer, and questioning
communities;
○ Respect the rights of members of 2SLGBTQ+ communities to participate in Capital Pride
/ Fierté dans la Capitale’s events; and
○ Not present images or messages that may promote or may condone, violence, hatred,
degradation, or negative stereotypes of marginalized and vulnerable groups.
● Seek help when needing assistance or when identifying an issue or problem. If a volunteer
makes a mistake or gets into trouble, they shall notify the Volunteer Coordinator or their
respectiveTeam Lead.
● Refer media interviews and requests to Capital Pride / Fierté dans la Capitale Spokespeople,
including the Executive Director, the Chairperson of the Board of Directors, or the Director of
Communications.
● Abide by all municipal, provincial, and federal laws while executing their duties as a volunteer.
● Follow Capital Pride / Fierté dans la Capitale’s policies, including the Harassment Policy.
3.3. UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOUR
The following is a list of unacceptable behaviour which will result in disciplinary actions, including but
not necessarily limited to, termination as a volunteer:
3.3.1. BEHAVIOUR
Acting in a way that causes or could reasonably cause damage to self, other volunteers
or staff, or festival attendees.
Acting in a way that causes or could reasonably cause damage to the reputation of
Capital Pride / Fierté dans la Capitale.
Conduct outside the scope of one’s volunteer duties in ways that could cause damage to
Capital Pride / Fierté dans la Capitale. For example, attempting to negotiate contracts on
behalf of Capital Pride / Fierté dans la Capitale, conducting media interviews, or falsely
representing yourself as a member of the staff, Festival Management Team, or Board of
Directors.
Acting in a way contrary to any applicable laws or regulations while volunteering.
3.3.2. HARASSMENT
Capital Pride / Fierté dans la Capitale has zero tolerance for harassment.
Harassment is a form of misconduct or improper behaviour that is offensive and which
the offending person knew, or ought reasonably to have known, would be unwelcome
and cause offence or harm. It comprises objectionable conduct, comment, or display
that demeans, belittles, or causes personal humiliation or embarrassment, and any acts
of intimidation or threats which may detrimentally affect individual well-being or the
volunteer environment.
Discriminatory harassment means to harass an individual based on a prohibited ground
of discrimination, namely race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual
orientation, gender identity, gender expression, marital status, family status, disability, or
conviction of an offence for which a pardon has been granted.
3.3.3. SEXUAL VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL HARASSMENT
Capital Pride / Fierté dans la Capitale has zero tolerance for sexual violence and sexual
harassment.
Sexual Harassment is any unwelcome conduct, comment, gesture, or contact of a
sexual nature, whether on a one-time basis or in a continuous series of incidents that
might reasonably be expected to cause offence, embarrassment or humiliation; and/or
might reasonably be expected to be perceived as placing a condition of a sexual nature
on participation, employment, services, or on any opportunity for training or
advancement.
Examples of sexual harassment include, but are not limited to:
● Remarks, jokes, innuendoes, or other comments regarding someone’s body,
appearance, physical or sexual characteristics, or clothing;
● Displaying of sexually offensive or derogatory pictures, cartoons, or other
material;
● Persistent unwelcome or uninvited invitations or requests;
● Unwelcome questions or sharing of information regarding a person’s sexuality,
sexual activity, or sexual orientation; or
● Conduct or comments intended to create, or having the effect of creating an
intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment.
Sexual Violence is any sexual act or act targeting a person’s sexuality, gender identity or
gender expression, whether the act is physical or psychological in nature, that is
committed, threatened or attempted against a person without the person’s consent.
Examples of sexual violence include, but are not limited to: unwanted touching, sexual
assault, stalking, indecent exposure, voyeurism, and sexual exploitation.
3.3.4. INTOXICATION
Volunteers shall not become inebriated, intoxicated, or otherwise impaired by the
consumption of alcohol or other drugs while performing their volunteer duties for Capital
Pride. Furthermore, the operation of a motor vehicle, including but not limited to a golf
cart, while inebriated or intoxicated is strictly forbidden under any circumstance.
COMMITMENT TO PRINCIPLES OF EQUITY AND INCLUSION
I agree to act in a manner consistent with the celebration of
Pride and positive value of diversity and inclusion in the 2SLGBTQ+ community, including Capital
Pride / Fierté dans la Capitale’s values. I recognize that as a volunteer, I represent Capital Pride /
Fierté dans la Capitale and agree to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion throughout my time
as a volunteer. I will not discriminate against any person on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
national origin, religious or political affiliation, sex, age, personal or family relations, disabilities,
HIV/AIDS, income restrictions, union affiliation, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
Further, I will reach out to the volunteer manager, team leaders, or the Executive Director if I
encounter situations that require assistance.
Further, I agree that I will not present images or messages that promote or condone, or may
reasonably be considered to promote or condone, violence, hatred, degradation or negative
stereotypes of any person(s) or group(s) including members of the 2SLGBTQ+community.
Further, I agree that I will respect the right of all members and supporters of the 2SLGBTQ+
community to participate in the Capital Pride / Fierté dans la Capitale’s events.
Agreement
I have read and agree to follow the Volunteer Code of Conduct and the Commitment to the
Principles of Equity and Inclusion. I understand and agree that failure to adhere to this Policy
may result in discipline up to and including termination of my services as a volunteer for Capital Pride / Fierté dans la Capitale.
