How Our Fellowship Program Works:
We recruit approximately 15 volunteer WCDH alumni readers to serve as fellowship judges. This not only keeps alumni engaged and connected to the Colony, but also fosters peer relationships and strengthens our literary network.
In addition to awarding the primary fellowship, we often offer 5–6 general residencies to applicants from each round, growing our creative community and deepening our reach.Once a winner is selected, we promote the announcement widely—within our own networks, in local and regional media, and in outlets tied to the winner’s community or affiliations.
The prestige of receiving a WCDH fellowship can significantly boost a writer’s confidence and career. Many past recipients have gone on to become some of our most enthusiastic advocates.
Community Impact:
Every fellowship winner is asked to participate in a community outreach activity during their residency—whether that’s leading a workshop, giving a public reading, or partnering with a regional organization.
When workshops are hosted at WCDH, proceeds directly support our Scholarship Fund—continuing the cycle of giving and accessibility.These outreach efforts foster genuine connections between visiting writers and our local community, creating cultural exchange and mutual inspiration.

As a sponsor, you may:
- Name the fellowship and define the focus or demographic you wish to support (e.g., theme, genre, identity group, cause)
- Assist in shaping the judging criteria, if desired
- Meet your sponsored writer in person by joining us for dinner during their residency
