Boston's approach to bike lane construction is failing. Too many projects are being rushed through without proper planning, expert guidance, or meaningful community input.
Residents, businesses, emergency services, and cyclists themselves are raising serious concerns, but so far, the city has not changed course. That's why we at Pedal Safe Boston support the ordinance recently introduced by Councilor Ed Flynn. The bill would:
- Pause all new bike lane construction until a real master plan is developed
- Create a Road Safety and Community Engagement Commission to guide future projects
- Bring in an independent engineering firm with national expertise in urban infrastructure
- Collect annual data and feedback from Boston residents and neighborhoods
Require a transparent process with timelines, safety evaluations, and clear public review
- Allow for unsafe or poorly designed lanes to be reevaluated and improved or removed
