Intentional Listening: Complete this challenge below with your co-parent during your call this week.
- Set a Timer for 2 Minutes
- One person speaks without interruption for the full 2 minutes.
- The speaker shares thoughts or feelings on a neutral co-parenting topic (e.g., “What I hope for our child this month” or “One thing that’s been hard about this transition”).
- Listener’s Role: No interrupting, no fixing, no defending. Just listen.
Focus on body language, eye contact, and staying present.
- Reflect Back: After the speaker finishes, the listener summarizes what they heard, using phrases like:
- “What I heard you say is…”
- “It sounds like you’re feeling…”
- “What matters to you about that is…”
- Switch Roles and Repeat: Now the other person speaks for 2 minutes while the first person listens, then reflects.
