  • Help Shape the Future of Aesthetic Governance in Aotearoa

    Clinical Aesthetic Network New Zealand
  • The Clinical Aesthetic Network of New Zealand (CANNZ) is seeking input from both aesthetic professionals and members of the public to help guide how aesthetic medicine is regulated in New Zealand.

A doctor-led society is currently consulting on becoming the sole regulatory body for aesthetic training and oversight - a move that could reshape how treatments are delivered, who can provide them, and how professionals are supported.

Whether you are an injector, clinic owner, or someone who has received or is considering aesthetic treatment, your voice matters.

Your feedback will help guide our response and ensure any future framework reflects:

    • The needs of the multidisciplinary professionals who make up the majority of the workforce
    • The expectations of consumers who value safe, ethical, and accessible care

    All responses are confidential.

Information may be anonymised, summarised, and used by CANNZ to inform formal submissions, advocacy efforts, and engagement with regulatory bodies including the Nursing Council of New Zealand and the Ministry of Health.

Thank you for contributing to this important national conversation.

Estimated time to complete: 3–5 minutes

  • Aesthetic medicine in New Zealand is evolving and so is the conversation around who should govern it.

A proposal has been put forward for a single, doctor-led society to act as the sole regulatory and training authority for all aesthetic practitioners including nurses, midwives, dentists, pharmacists, and paramedics.

But we know the reality of our industry:

    • The majority of aesthetic treatments in Aotearoa are delivered by nurses and allied health professionals
    • These treatments are already being performed safely, ethically, and within scope  under standing orders, clinical oversight, and established protocols
    • The workforce is multidisciplinary, and any future regulation should reflect that and not concentrate power in one profession

At the Clinical Aesthetic Network of New Zealand (CANNZ), we strongly support consistent, high-quality standards but we believe regulation must also be:

    • Proportionate to clinical risk
    • Designed in partnership with those actually delivering care
    • Supportive of professional autonomy for nurses and allied aesthetic practitioners
    • Flexible enough to grow with the sector, not restrict it

This survey invites feedback from across the aesthetic workforce - whether you’re a nurse, dentist, midwife, pharmacist, paramedic, or doctor to help shape a governance model that is safe, inclusive, and reflective of real-world practice.

Your voice will help guide CANNZ’s advocacy and formal submissions to the Nursing Council, Ministry of Health, and other key stakeholders.

All responses are confidential, and the survey takes just 3–5 minutes.

Thank you for helping us champion a regulatory future that values both clinical excellence and workforce integrity.

  • Consumer Questions

  • Across Aotearoa, more and more New Zealanders are choosing aesthetic treatments, from anti-wrinkle injections to dermal fillers and advanced skin therapies. These treatments are most often performed not by doctors, but by a wide range of qualified, experienced professionals including nurses, dentists, pharmacists, midwives, and paramedics.

In fact, these allied health professionals now deliver the majority of aesthetic treatments in New Zealand. And they do so safely with low complication rates, robust clinical training, and ongoing oversight through standing orders and prescribing partnerships.

At the Clinical Aesthetic Network of New Zealand (CANNZ), we believe the regulation of this growing field must reflect this reality. We support a governance model that is:

    • Multidisciplinary, not dominated by one profession
    • Proportionate to clinical risk, not unnecessarily restrictive
    • Designed to protect patient safety, without limiting access or innovation

We also believe in supporting the professionals who provide your care - ensuring they have access to training, clear standards, and the ability to practise autonomously within their scope.

This short survey invites your voice as a patient, client, or member of the public. Your feedback will help us advocate for regulation that is fair, transparent, and grounded in how aesthetic care is actually delivered in New Zealand today.

It takes just 3–5 minutes, and your response is confidential.

Thank you for helping us put both safety and choice at the centre of aesthetic care.

  • About the Clinical Aesthetic Network of New Zealand (CANNZ)

The Clinical Aesthetic Network of New Zealand (CANNZ) is a professional body representing nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives, pharmacists, dentists, paramedics, and other allied health professionals working in aesthetic medicine across Aotearoa.

Founded in 2016, CANNZ was created to ensure aesthetic practitioners are supported, recognised, and held to high standards in a fast-growing and often under-regulated sector.

    We are committed to:

    • Advocating for profession-led, multidisciplinary governance that reflects how aesthetic care is delivered in real practice - not dictated by one group alone
    • Promoting clinical excellence and public safety through peer-reviewed practitioner accreditation, structured CPD, and independent auditing
    • Providing a transparent, consumer-facing complaints process that complements statutory bodies and supports safe patient access
    • Upholding cultural safety and equity in aesthetic practice, ensuring Māori, Pasifika, and underrepresented voices are included in how care is delivered and governed
    • Creating opportunities for professional connection, education, and advancement in the aesthetic sector

We believe in a future where aesthetic professionals are trusted, autonomous, and supported to provide ethical, evidence-based care and where regulation is proportionate, inclusive, and designed in partnership with those it affects most.
