Apply for the Bilingual Medical Spanish–Medical English Elective and Scholarship

New York City • August 2025–2026
  • Interested in Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Pediatric EM, Pathology, or Psychiatry? Passionate about caring for patients with LHS+, or Spanish-speaking lived experiences from across the globe?

A new set of bicultural and bilingual clinical electives is launching in New York City, supported by several grants. As part of the feasibility phase, the program will offer financial assistance for elective fees, travel, and housing (up to $1,500, including $400 toward elective costs).

    Who should apply?
Preference will be given to applicants who can secure housing in NYC and meet other program criteria. Each elective includes direct care for Spanish-speaking patients; at least a quarter of your patient encounters must be in Spanish. Students will also complete guided reflection activities focused on the health needs, inequities, and strengths of LHS+ communities served at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens or partnered clinical sites.

    Eligibility:
    • Fourth-year medical students who have passed Step 1
    • Advanced or native Spanish speakers (please reach out if you are unsure of where your proficiency is)
    • Enrolled at an LCME- or COCA-accredited medical school
