A collaborative offering between
Sex Workers Outreach Project Los Angeles
& Holistic Abortions
Class description:
This presentation explores how sex workers navigate abortion care through practices of resistance rooted in liberatory care and lived reproductive histories. Centering the voices and experiences of sex workers, it examines how systems of surveillance, criminalization, and stigma impact access to reproductive care, while highlighting community-based strategies for reclaiming bodily autonomy.
In response, sex workers have built resilient care networks grounded in mutual aid, ancestral knowledge, trauma-informed support, and liberatory practices. The workshop will highlight the work of Sex Workers’ Abortion Navigation Services (SWANS), a peer-led initiative supporting those seeking abortion care in criminalized and surveilled spaces. Together, we’ll explore how to center and honor sex workers' contributions to reproductive justice and build a more inclusive, empowered future.
Teacher Bio: Sophia, MPH (they/she) and Eleanor (she/her) are Program Coordinators at the Sex Workers’ Abortion Navigation Services (SWANS), a project of SWOP LA. Sophia also serves as Communication and Education Coordinator at SWOPLA, leading outreach, workshops, and public communications. Eleanor is a peer lead navigator and full-spectrum doula, supporting sex workers in accessing safe, compassionate reproductive care. Together, they work to dismantle systemic barriers in healthcare and advance reproductive justice through education, advocacy, and direct support. Rooted in community-based care, their work uplifts sex workers’ autonomy and challenges punitive systems that criminalize instead of supporting informed, empowered choices.
