Before your motorcycle can be registered for use on New Zealand roads, it must undergo an official Compliance Inspection at an NZTA-approved facility.

In most cases, Willship will deliver the motorcycle directly to the compliance facility after it passes its quarantine inspection at the port.

✅ This inspection includes checks for:

• Rust, structural integrity, and previous repairs
• Exhaust system noise and emissions
• Brake condition and performance
• Steering, suspension, tyres, and wheels
• Lights, indicators, and speedometer accuracy
• ADR plate verification (must be present and legible)
• Aftermarket modifications that may require LVV certification

⚠️ If rust, repairs, or structural damage are found, the motorcycle may also need a separate repair certification before it can be registered.

Please confirm the following:

If your motorcycle does not meet New Zealand’s standard entry certification requirements — for example, if it lacks ABS or does not meet emissions regulations — you may still be able to register it under the Immigrant’s Exemption.

This exemption is granted by NZTA and allows personal-use vehicles that don’t meet current standards to be registered as long as the importer meets all the following criteria:

✅ You have lived outside of New Zealand for at least 21 consecutive months
✅ You have personally owned and used the motorcycle for at least 12 months prior to shipping and prior to leaving Australia
✅ You are a returning resident or first-time immigrant moving to New Zealand permanently
✅ You are importing the motorcycle for personal use only (not for resale)
✅ This is the only vehicle you are importing under the exemption
✅ You will be in New Zealand at the time the motorcycle arrives
✅ You are applying for the exemption within 18 months of arriving in NZ
✅ The exemption form will be signed in front of a Justice of the Peace or Compliance Officer

📌 There is a fee of AUD 210 to process this exemption.

We strongly reccomend reaching out to an NZTA / compliance facility to discuss the specifics of your bike prior to shipping to ensure you know the process and costs on arrival.

Would you like to take out a transit insurance policy?

If you'd like us to arrange this for you, we’ll simply need to know your motorcycle’s value. You can provide:

• The amount you paid for the vehicle, or
• A current market estimate based on a similar vehicle for sale online

The policy cost is 1.75% of the insured value + shipping costs, with a minimum premium of AUD $455.

There is a AUD $500 excess, which would be deducted from any claim payout if required (no upfront payment is needed).

Although international shipping is generally low-risk and we partner with highly reputable teams throughout the process, there are still elements beyond our direct control — such as port operators, quarantine cleaning staff, and depot handlers.

Because these third parties are not employed by Willship, we’re unable to accept liability for any loss or damage that may occur during transit.

For peace of mind, we strongly recommend taking out transit insurance to ensure you’re covered in the unlikely event something goes wrong.

RORO shipping is specifically designed for the transport of empty motorcycles, and the keys must travel with the motorcycle at all times.

We strongly recommend that you do not leave any personal items inside the motorcycle (if you have storage bins or saddle bags), as there have been instances in the past where items have gone missing due to theft or unauthorised access during transit.

If you choose to leave items inside, please be aware:

• They are shipped entirely at your own risk
• The shipping line or port staff may reject the vehicle if internal cargo is found
• Additional charges may be applied by NZ Customs or MPI if goods are discovered during inspection

Please note that Willship cannot accept liability for any loss, damage, or theft of items left inside the motorcycle when shipping via Roll on, Roll off.

✅ Please confirm:

When moving your vehicle internationally, Willship International must rely on a range of third-party organisations and government bodies to complete the process. These include:

• Australian port workers who receive, load, and secure vehicles for Roll-on Roll-off (RoRo) shipping
• Shipping lines and vessel crews responsible for transporting the vehicles and containers
• Destination port workers who unload cargo and prepare it for inspection
• Customs and biosecurity officers who may inspect your vehicle
• Quarantine cleaning facilities (if additional cleaning is required)
  
  

As much as we wish we could, we simply cannot control the actions or timelines of these third parties. They do not work for Willship, and their processes operate independently from ours.

While issues are uncommon, occasional delays, inspections, or handling issues can occur — and this is true no matter which freight forwarder is used. We always do everything in our power to manage the process smoothly, but some elements are unavoidably outside our control.

In rare cases, additional port storage charges or customs inspection fees may arise. These fees are determined by third parties and are typically the result of unforeseen delays during the clearance process. While we always aim to avoid such costs, we believe it’s important to be transparent about when and why they can occur.

Situations That May Incur Storage or Inspection-Related Fees:

⏱️ Port Free Time Expiry
Most international ports and unpacking facilities provide three working days of free storage. If your vehicle fails an initial inspection or is ordered for a Customs exam, and clearance cannot be completed within this window, storage charges may apply.

🔍 Customs Exams & Inspections
Customs may select shipments for inspection either at random or due to specific indicators. These inspections are entirely outside of Willship’s control and can include:

• Physical inspections (basic or detailed)
• X-ray scanning
• Sniffer dog screening
• Temporary seizure or further investigation

Customs rarely provide detailed reasoning for these actions, and Willship is not involved in their decision-making process.

🧼 Quarantine Cleaning Backlog
If Quarantine orders your vehicle for cleaning or treatment and their contracted service providers are experiencing delays, it may not be possible to complete cleaning in time to avoid port storage charges.

💬 Important Note:
While these charges are not issued by Willship, we typically handle the payment on your behalf and then include them in your invoice for settlement. In many cases, we don’t agree with these charges or consider them fair — especially when caused by government agency backlogs. However, this is part of the system when importing into Australia using their port infrastructure. These charges are imposed directly by the port, unpack depot, or government agency and are payable before your cargo can be released.

Invoices are issued at the time of booking to confirm your shipment. We kindly ask that payment is made in full before your motorcycle is collected or delivered to our depot/port for shipping. Please note that we’re only able to arrange transport and accept motorcycles into our care once payment has been received and funds cleared. Delays in payment may affect collection dates, shipment schedules, or booking availability.
