• Brazosoport College Tails & Teeth Saltwater Fishing Derby

  • Official Brazosport College Fishing Derby Rules:

    1. Every Angler must be entered and registered before the start date and time of the Derby.

    2. All registered anglers must be 17 years of age or older and have a valid Texas Fishing License, all participants under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a parent or legal gaurdian 17 years of age or older with a valid Texas Fishing License.

    3. Anglers cannot enter any fish caught before the start time and date.

    4. All fish must be caught on rod, reel, hook and line.

    5. All fish must be caught in public waters and not in restricted water ways such as Dow barge canal, Colorado locks, Brazos River flood gates, and other such restricted water ways.

    6. All fish must be caught legally according to all Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) regulations.

    7. All fish must be submitted via the Derby submission form with clear photos of the fish and the form filled out in its entirety. NOTE: any form submitted incomplete or pictures that do not display the fish to be within legal size limits will not be accepted.

    8. In the drop pin section of the submission form anglers must drop a pin with their location to verify that the fish is caught in allowed waterways. For example, if you use apple maps your pin drop must be next to your blue location indicator.

    9. In the event of a tie the winning fish will be granted to the first fish submitted.

    10. All prizes and awards must be picked up within 30 days of the end date of the derby or they will remain with Brazosport College.

    11. There will be a Texas grand slam division but with a twist. In the event an angler catches all fish commonly required to complete a Texas Grand Slam, within the duration of the Derby will have the ability to enter the winner takes all Gator Slam division. What this means is that if between 6a.m. Thursday July 31st and 12p.m. August 2nd a angler catches a red drum black drum speckled trout and a flounder they can submit all of them either in the same picture or seperate (still meaasured) along with the pin drop location of where each fish was caught, they will have completed a Gator Slam and can enter to win the Division prize which is a winner takes all prize. There is no second and third place for this division only a first place.   

    12. Fish cannot be entered more than once and no one fish can be entered in more than one division. What this means is that if you have a redfish that is 26” long and has 8 spots on or near the tail it must be entered in either the most spots division or the length division and will not be permitted in both divisions. The same is true for the Gator Slam division, in the event you enter the GS division, and you have already entered your catch into other division those same fish may not be counted towards your GS entry. However, in the event you would like to withdraw your fish from all other categories to enter them in the GS category you may do so. To withdraw and enter the GS division you will simply make a note in the GS submission form under the notes section that you would like your fish to be withdrawn from other divisions and enter in the GS division and we will take care ofthe rest.

    13. Participants may fish offshore, inshore, from the bank, and kayaking.

    14. Participants may not use a professional guide. What this means is that if you enter the Derby, you may not pay to fish with a guide in any capacity inshore offshore on the bank etc. Knowledge of any use of professional guides will result in automatic disqualification.

    15. No submissions after 12p.m. August 2nd will be acceptabled and/or considered for placement in the leader board. 

    16. Derby Directors’ decisions are final.

    17. Brazosport College is not responsible for any accidents.

    TPWD Regulations and how to comply in this Competition

    • Redfish/Red Drum: Minimum Length- 20 inches, Maximum length- 28 inches
    • No Red drum under 20 inches and/or over 27 inches will be accepted.
    • All Red drum entered into the spots category must also be of legal length.
    • Black Drum: Minimum length- 14 inches, maximum length 30 inches.
    • No Black drum under 14 inches and/or over 29 inches will be accepted.
    • Speckled/Spotted Trout: Minimum Length- 15 inches, maximum length 20 inches.
    • No Speckled/spotted trout under 15 inches and/or over 20 inches will be accepted.
    • Flounder: Minimum length- 15 inches, no maximum length.
    • No flounder under 15 inches will be accepted.

    Categories: All categories and finalists will be determined by the length of fish submitted and time of submission (in the event of a tie).

    • Black Drum
    • Red Drum
    • Spotted/Speckled Trout
    • Flounder
    • Most spots on Red Drum
    • Texas Grand Slam

    How to measure and stay within submission compliance:

    It is recommended that you take your fish to a weight station and submit a picture of your fish during measurement at the recommended weigh stations. Any angler that decides to measure their fish themselves must use the recommended TPWD measuring instructions.

    Prizes:

    1st place in each category: Plaque, 100qt, Igloo cooler

    2nd place in each category: Plaque, Penn Wrath Gear 2 Rod & Reel combo

    3rd place in each category: Plaque, 32oz. Owala Tumbler

    The Gator Slam Winner (there can only be one) will receive a Plaque, and a combo prize of a 45qt. magellan cooler and 13qt. magellan bait bucket.
