The Systems Approaches for Healthy Communities Self-Paced course is designed to promote the integration of PSE change approaches with educational strategies.  The five-module program is designed for organizations whose work focuses on health promotion to help staff understand, reflect, and act on the many factors that influence whether individuals can easily make healthy choices. Participation in the course offers 5 hours of continuing education and has been pre-approved by the National Commission on Health Education Credentialing and the National Board of Public Health Examiners.

    Course Objectives:

    • Module 1:  Frameworks for Healthy Communities  | Explain how systems impact whether the healthy choice is the easy choice.  Apply definitions of PSE as part of a common language for health promotion.  Describe how multi-level approaches to health promotion can have a greater impact on health outcomes than direct education approaches alone.

    • Module 2: Taking a Systems Approach  |  Identify potential actions on each level of the Spectrum of Prevention to address a specific issue, and recognize which level a given action or intervention represents.  Describe the importance of integrating both DE and PSE change interventions to achieve a greater impact in our work.

    • Module 3: Engaging with Communities  |  Identify the role of community engagement in systems approaches to health promotion.  Describe basic principles for engaging and partnering.  Recognize different levels of community participation and identify appropriate tools and strategies at each level.  Differentiate between outreach and engagement.

    • Module 4: Knowing Your Community  |  Describe the purpose and role of assessment in PSE change approaches to health promotion work.  Explain why assessment is an ongoing process that informs all of our work.  Develop questions and identify tools to use in assessment related to healthy eating and active living.

    • Module 5: Putting It All Together  |  Explain that implementing PSE approaches requires ongoing learning, reflection, and practice.  Locate resources in the Systems Approaches Toolkit to take systems approaches to communities and to build community development and leadership skills.  Create a plan to apply learning by setting specific goals regarding PSE approaches.
