  • ATTENDANCE POLICY

Please Read Entirely and Sign AFTER reading the Band Handbook
  • The quality of the Tullahoma High School Band Program is directly proportional to consistent attendance. Absences hurt the student and the overall team goal. Everyone plays a vital role as a team member in this organization. While the Tullahoma High School Band follows all district policies and procedures, the following additional guidelines outline the attendance procedures and policies for the Tullahoma High School Band. These attendance policies also apply to activities held during the school day, including pep rallies, as well as campus and community performances. These attendance policies also apply to activities held outside of the school day. Failure to participate in either rehearsals or performances may result in student removal from a performance or the organization at the discretion of the band directors.

Punctuality is essential for all rehearsals and performances. Chronically poor attendance/punctuality will be sufficient grounds to be removed from a specific performance or from the Tullahoma High School Band entirely.

All rehearsals and performances are required. Each band family will be issued a performance calendar each year. Each student will have two-weeks to turn in a request for an excused absence. Extenuating or emergency circumstances (i.e. student illness, funerals, etc.) that arise after the forms have been turned into the band office will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Band students and parents are respectfully asked to not schedule doctor's/dentist/ driver’s license appointments during band rehearsals except in case of emergency.

Unexcused absences from rehearsals and performances will result in a zero for the performance and/or after school rehearsal grade. Examples of unexcused absences would include (but are not limited to) the following: work, vacations, homework, family social events, not finding a ride, babysitting siblings, non-school sports, haircut appointments, dance practices, etc. Absences due to avoidable, elective conflicts or as a result of poor planning will not be excused. An opportunity to make-up the zero grade will be provided and must be completed within 3 days of the student's return to school. Students should stay familiar with the band calendar and communicate with parents, siblings, employers, friends, etc.

In the case of a sudden unexpected absence, parents should notify the band directors via email within 48 hours. Students can also submit an email to the band directors with a valid parent email address copied on the email.

School Related Activity Conflict Resolution Policies:

The Tullahoma High School Band is designed so that students can participate in other TCS sanctioned events. Conflicts with the band rehearsal and performance schedule will arise. The following policies have been developed in order to help parents and students in these situations:

    • Parents and students should compare the band rehearsal and performance calendar against the team/activity calendar to find any potential conflicts.
    • Parents should email BOTH the band directors and the coach/activity sponsor about the potential conflict.
    • A game/meet takes precedence over a band rehearsal.
    • A band performance takes precedence over a team practice/club activity.

If a conflict occurs between a band performance and a game/school activity, the band directors and coaches/activity sponsors will determine which activity the student will participate in. In most cases, these conflicts are easily resolved. Band directors and coaches/activity sponsors will always make it a priority to have the student attend both events if possible.

    PLEASE NOTE:

Parents may be responsible for providing transportation between activities when two events occur the same day.

  • High School Band Program Student Expectations & Code of Conduct

Participation in the Tullahoma City Schools High School Band Program is a privilege, not a right. Band members are students first and therefore should understand all school rules are to be followed. Student band members are held to a higher standard throughout rehearsals, and the entirety of the school year. Band members must make good decisions about behavior while on campus, at away events, on school buses, and in the community.

Please read this document carefully. Students who earn the right to wear a TCS band uniform assume their responsibility to represent their school, district, parents, and themselves with pride every day. A commitment by everyone involved allows TCS programs to build and shape successful leaders. Our directors, members, and parents all contribute significantly to the quality of our program.

EXPECTATIONS: Band members are also expected to promote good sportsmanship, the band family atmosphere, good citizenship, and overall respectable behavior in all aspects of daily activities throughout the duration of the school year as outlined below:

    • Maintain exemplary attendance, punctuality, and participation in class & rehearsal.
    • Demonstrate respect for teachers, staff, students, and community members.
    • Exercise good judgment and digital citizenship when using all forms of technology, including cell phones and devices, to access social media. This includes, but is not limited to posting, sending, or saving explicit messages, chats, videos, pictures and/or participating in any form of cyberbullying or harassment.
    • Exercise maturity and respect towards band members and other programs.
    • Maintain and promote overall wellness.
    • Adhere to school handbook and band handbook policies as communicated by the district and directors.

Failure to meet the outlined expectations will result in disciplinary action as determined by the directors and administration and could include one or more of the following steps:

    1. The directors will determine a plan to allow the student the opportunity to regain good standing with the band program. The focus of this disciplinary action is to recognize mistakes and promote growth. Ultimately, the student must demonstrate the desire and commitment to complete this plan.
    2. The directors will initiate a referral to the appropriate school or community service providers to support the student in improving behavior. The referral may include a counselor, nurse, athletic trainer, social worker, BCBA, etc If addiction support is necessary, attendance and completion may be required before returning to the band program.
    3. The band member's rehearsal and performance opportunities will be limited.
    4. The band member will lose the leadership positions for the current school year.
    5. The band member will be dismissed from the program.

The Principal will also administer disciplinary procedures according to TCS board policy for violation of school rules according to:

    • TCS Board Policy 6.300 Code of Conduct
    • TCS Board Policy 6.304 Student Discrimination, Harassment, Bullying, Cyber-bullying, and Intimidation
    • TCS Board Policy 6.309 Zero Tolerance Offenses

TCS Band Directors will strive to build character, maintain a safe environment, & promote the overall health of all members. Directors will:

    • Provide a band handbook and communicate any additional guidelines specific to the band program.
    • Provide rehearsal and performance schedules.
    • Provide a nurturing and welcoming environment for all students to work towards their goals and potential.
    • Monitor activities to maintain an environment that eliminates bullying, harassment, hazing, and intimidation.
