• Spay/Neuter Assistance Program Application
  • Patty Baker Humane Society Naples is here to help make pet sterilization affordable for low-income households. It's an unhappy fact that there are far more dogs and cats than there are loving homes for them. As a result, thousands of these homeless creatures roam urban and rural areas trying to scratch out a miserable and often brief existence. Most dogs and cats will not survive to their fourth birthday, but in their short lifetime, they will face starvation, disease, parasites, injury, predation, and a lonely, often painful death. The saddest part is that this needless suffering could be avoided if people would just have their pets spayed or neutered. Spaying and neutering are simple veterinary surgical operations to sterilize pets, preventing them from producing offspring. For a female, spaying removes her ovaries-her egg producing organs. For a male, neutering removes his testicles-making him unable to fertilize a female's egg. Experts agree that pet owners who have their pets spayed or neutered have made the single most effective contribution possible to controlling the unwanted pet population. The Benefits of Pet Sterilization:

In addition to reducing the number of homeless and unwanted pets, sterilization has additional benefits:

    - Do not wander off in search of a mate

    - Have fewer fights

    - Behave better around familiar people

    - Have no urge to frequently spray and mark their territory

    - Less likely to emit noises and scents that annoy you and your neighbors and attract other animals to your property

    Myths About Sterilization:

There are several misunderstandings about pet sterilization. One is that dogs will become less aggressive protectors after the operation. But dogs are by instinct quite territorial and will still be valuable protection after sterilization. Another myth is that all sterilized animals become fat and lazy. However, age, diet, and the amount of time owners spend exercising their animals are true determining factors in their pet's appearance, attitude and behavior. There is also the belief that females must not be spayed until after their first litter. It is actually better for the animal to be spayed before she has that first litter as this reduces the chance of her developing certain cancers later in life. Patty Baker Humane Society Naples wants to help low-income pet owners who wish to have their animals spayed or neutered. To be considered, individuals must document financial hardship. Those applicants who are approved will be able to have their animals spayed or neutered at no cost or for a greatly-reduced fee, determined by need. Those on disability or welfare are eligible to have their pets sterilized at no charge.
