We are looking for an experienced and knowledgeable individual to lead the Guns, Archery, and Fishing Department in our Hamilton Montana store as the Hunting & Fishing Department Manager. The ideal candidate is seasoned and passionate about all things hunting, fishing, and outdoor sports, with a strong background in firearm compliance and outdoor gear.
This individual will also manage the broader Hunting Department, with oversight of Fishing and Archery, ensuring all areas operate smoothly and meet company standards for service and performance.
This position requires a thorough understanding of firearm transactions, including Acquisition & Disposition (A&D) books, FastBound software, and ATF Form 4473. Due to the regulatory nature of firearm sales, a high level of attention to detail, professionalism, and consistency is essential. Accuracy and compliance are critical, and the successful candidate will be trusted to uphold these standards with care and diligence.
As the Department Manager, you will lead a team of knowledgeable and enthusiastic employees while maintaining a well-organized, compliant, and customer-focused environment. You’ll be responsible for sales leadership, team training, merchandising, and ensuring compliance with all applicable federal and state firearm laws.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and motivate the Hunting, Fishing, and Archery departments with a focus on sales, product knowledge, and compliance.
- Hire, train, schedule, and coach staff to meet sales goals and manage payroll efficiently.
- Deliver exceptional customer service and build strong customer relationships.
- Ensure complete accuracy and compliance in all firearm transactions (4473s, A&D books, FastBound).
- Educate customers on proper use and maintenance of firearms, fishing, and archery gear.
- Stay current on industry trends, new products, and technologies.
- Maintain clean, organized departments and uphold visual merchandising standards.
- Oversee inventory, vendor coordination, promotions, and seasonal transitions.
Monitor department performance and communicate regularly with store leadership.
- Lead by example to uphold company values and standards.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a management role, ideally in retail or outdoor sporting goods.
- At least 2 years of hands-on experience in a Hunting & Fishing department.
- Extensive knowledge of firearms, including makes, models, scopes, and hunting-related practices.
- Proven experience in retail firearm sales with a solid understanding of federal and state compliance requirements.
- Proficiency with FastBound or similar A&D recordkeeping software.
- Strong working knowledge of hunting, fishing, and archery gear; fly fishing experience preferred.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and customer service skills.
- Highly organized with a proactive work ethic and strong attention to detail.
- Comfortable approaching and engaging customers; able to assess needs and offer tailored product recommendations.
- Sound judgment, problem-solving ability, and logical decision-making under pressure.
- Must pass all applicable background checks to handle and sell firearms.
- Able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Physically able to stand for extended periods, bend, stretch, perform repetitive motions, and lift/push/pull up to 20 lbs.
