Milking Volunteer Program Agreement & Releases of Liability

  • I.  Milking Volunteer Agreement & Milk Policy
Thank you for your interest in volunteering on our farm! This agreement outlines what to expect, how we work, and what we offer in return for your time and effort. Please read carefully before signing at the bottom.

    ⏰ Shift Schedules
We currently run the following shifts for goat, sheep, and/or cow milking:

    • AM shifts on weekends (starting around 7:30/8am)
    • PM shifts on weekdays and weekends (starting around 7PM)

The start times may shift slightly depending on internal team needs. Some shifts include only external volunteers, while others are mixed with internal crew. We will do our best to coordinate shift timing and connect you with others on the same shift. Clear communication is essential!

    🧪 Training Period
Your first two milking sessions are considered training and shadowing:

    • No milk is shared during these sessions
    • This period serves as a mutual trial to ensure a good fit
    • Volunteers should watch our Goat Milking Intro Video prior to first session (https://youtu.be/9Oh-16S3RO8)

    🤝 Commitment Expectations
Training takes time and resources. We prioritize volunteers who can commit ideally at least once or twice a week consistently after training. However, we may occasionally consider volunteers with less frequent availability—such as once a month—if there’s a good mutual fit. To begin, we ask for a commitment to the full training period and at least four complete milking shifts. Once trained and established as a trusted external volunteer, we’re happy to be more flexible, keep you in the loop, and reach out when extra help is needed.

If you attend only once or twice, or do not continue after training, we consider it an agri-experience or class, and may request a $30 contribution per session to reflect time and resource use.

🥛 Fruits of Your Labor – Milk Sharing
We love sharing the goodness you help create! As a small thank-you for your time and energy, volunteers who continue after training get to enjoy some of the fruits of their labor—in the form of fresh, delicious milk. If you'd like milk after your shift, please notify Jody, Yahali, or one of the internal milk managers so they can allocate it. As a general rule of thumb we share:

    • ½ gallon after your first full milking shift
    • 1 quart per shared shift afterward (please assume eligibiity for ½ gallon if you cover a full shift solo!)

Two shifts = ½ gallon to pick up on your second shift (preferred), or 1 quart per shift (your choice). Please bring your own clean jars, or contribute $5 per jar if needed.

If you'd like even more milk, then please inquire to joing and contribute as a herd share member for weekly shares (https://www.jotform.com/250400534483146)

    ⚠️ Milk Availability & Storage
Milk sharing is based on availability on your volunteer day
If milk is not available, you may be credited for a future shift
Milk not picked up during the week is not guaranteed for future credit due to limited supply and storage
Milk may not be shared or sold to others
You are responsible for bringing your own ice, cooler, or proper storage for milk transport. Recommended fridge temp: 34–38°F

🧀 About Soured & Clabbered Milk
Raw milk naturally ferments due to beneficial bacteria and can be used for:

    • Cheese
    • Yogurt
    • Baking
    • Traditional clabbered milk
    • Soured raw milk is not spoiled like pasteurized milk. Its enzymes and bacteria are useful for home fermentation.

⚖️ Raw Milk Consumption Release of Liability

Raw milk is unpasteurized and consumed at your own risk. The farm is not responsible for any illness, injury, or damage related to milk or your time on the farm. Milk may not be shared with others unless they have signed a liability waiver. If you give milk to others without a waiver, you accept full liability
This agreement remains in effect indefinitely unless ended by written notice. If herd share pickup days or volumes change, written confirmation is required.
