The Mountain & Valley Wool Association (MAVWA) was founded in 1983
Historically, its mission has been to promote fiber from all fiber bearing animals—especially those in Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas, as well as other natural fibers—and to pass on the rich history of fiber arts-related crafts to the next generation of fiber enthusiasts.
Early Wool Festivals were held in Taos at Kit Carson Park. It became known as the 'Taos Wool Festival'. In 2022 the Festival moved to the Santa Fe County Fairgrounds, and was renamed the 'Mountain and Valley Wool Festival'
In recent years the mission has been expanded to specifically include the Navajo Nation geographical area, and to welcome those working in other non-animal fibers. With that expansion came the renaming of the festival to 'The Mountain & Valley Fiber Arts Festival' in 2025.
MAVWA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization run entirely by volunteers.
