INITIAL APPLICATION FOR ASSESSMENT BY BMAA OF A PROPOSED MICROLIGHT AIRCRAFT MODIFICATION/REPAIR
  • 1. Aircraft Details

    • On many aircraft the variant is defined by powerplant configuration. If this is the case state a) engine make / type, b) reduction drive ratio and c) propeller make / type, number of blades and pitch setting. State if the engine is inverted.
    • Details should represent the current aircraft configuration (pre-modification).
    • Aircraft must be wholly owned by BMAA members (a BMAA Aircraft Ownership Trustee Grid should be submitted with this form for syndicate/group/company owned aircraft
  • Please note that:

    • Approval is not guaranteed.
    • Some modifications require stage inspections during implementation (impossible if already implemented).
    • It is illegal to fly the aircraft before the modification is approved. As modification approval can take a significant time, remove the modification until approval is granted if you wish to fly in the short term.
    • You may not apply for modification approval together with an application for revalidation of the Permit to Fly.
  • Please note that:

    • Owners are strongly advised that no repair work is commenced before the BMAA Technical Office has had the opportunity to assess the damage and the intended plan of action.
    • Approval is not guaranteed.
    • Some repairs require stage inspections during implementation.
  • Introduction

Although not mandatory, strobes offer a significant safety benefit for aircraft flying in VMC in poor visibility or low light conditions. Nonetheless, poorly located / fitted strobes can endanger an aircraft, and (therefore) formal approval of strobe installations is a requirement.

This is the initial application for fitment of strobe lights to a 3-axis control, and powered-parachute aircraft. It should also be used for non-standard strobe light installations on weight-shift control aircraft. For standard strobe light installations on weight-shift control aircraft, owners should use BMAA Standard Minor Modification 106.

Please refer to BMAA TIL 013 for further guidance.

    Process

This form should be used for making the initial application to the Technical Office for approval of a proposed strobe light installation.

Once satisfied that the installation should be safe and meet the applicable airworthiness requirements, the Technical Office will issue an approval in principle for the installation. At this point the strobes should be installed and the installation inspected by a BMAA Inspector. The completed inspection schedule must then be sent to the Technical Office for final approval.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT FIT YOUR STROBE LIGHTS UNTIL YOU HAVE RECEIVED AUTHORISATION FROM THE BMAA – FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS GUIDANCE
COULD HAVE AN ADVERSE EFFECT ON THE AIRWORTHINESS OF YOUR AIRCRAFT

  • 2. Applicant

    • The applicant need not be a BMAA member.
    • Most correspondence must be in writing. Email is most convenient for the BMAA.
  • 3. Inspector

    • A suitably qualified BMAA Inspector is required to inspect and sign-off modifications/repairs.
    • There is no longer a requirement for the nominated Inspector to sign this form, but the nominated Inspector should have been asked by the applicant, and agreed in principle to being involved in the project.
  • 4. NTO

    • Modifications to supported, type-approved (factory built, not amateur built) aircraft that may have a significant effect on airworthiness require the type-approval holder to declare that they have No Technical Objection (NTO) to the modification. When NTO is not required it is nonetheless good practice to approach the designer for his comments or advice.
  • 5. Proposed modification/repair

    • Attach document(s) describing the modification(s)/repair(s) in detail. On receipt of this application the BMAA will advise the applicant of any additional information required.
    • Ensure documents are unambiguously marked with an issue number (or date) to avoid confusion if it is necessary to re-issue them.
    • For repairs, a template application is available on the BMAA website (forms A2/074 and 074a).
