At APAP, we work hard to fulfill our mission, vision and values while responding to the challenges that performing arts professionals face to best serve our members and the field.
One of the ways APAP meets the moment is through the leadership of its Board of Directors.
Annually, APAP solicits nominations for Board membership. APAP has up to 7 potential open board seats to serve a three-year board term, commencing January 2026.
We invite nominations to join this high-impact circle of thought leaders working collectively to ensure that APAP has the infrastructure and resources to support arts leaders, now and into the future. Read about our 5-year Sustainability Plan.
All expertise and perspectives are valued on the Board of Directors. APAP engages an active, working Board, committing a minimum of 2-4 hours monthly on behalf of the APAP membership.
APAP aims to have a Board that reflects the membership of APAP (Artists, Agents, Managers, Producers, Presenters, and other arts professionals), multigenerational representation of leadership, and wide-ranging geographic representation (including members from across the U.S., North America, and the globe.)
Below, in non-ranking, alphabetical order are priority areas for the current nominations cycle. We seek nominees with the following experience, expertise, and attributes:
- Advocacy Experience: Individuals with a background in arts advocacy or public policy, particularly those who can help advance APAP’s mission through government relations, lobbying efforts, or public awareness campaigns.
- Board Governance Experience: Individuals with prior board service, especially those familiar with fiduciary responsibilities, strategic planning, fundraising, and organizational oversight and those with experience at other national organizations.
- An Entrepreneurial Mindset: Candidates who demonstrate innovative thinking, strategic risk-taking, and a proactive approach to problem-solving—especially those who have launched initiatives, built programs, or led organizational growth in the arts or related sectors.
- Fundraising Capacity and Connections: APAP board members are expected to contribute a minimum of $1,000 annually and actively participate in broader fundraising efforts on behalf of APAP (e.g., identifying donors, assisting with outreach).
- Legal Expertise: Candidates with a legal background, particularly those who can contribute to strengthening APAP’s organizational infrastructure and governance.
- Non-Profit Management Experience: Individuals with leadership experience in non-profit organizations, particularly those who understand governance, budgeting, staffing, and program delivery in a mission-driven context.
Additionally, we are seeking the following representation to augment the composition of our current board:
- Representation from Large Agencies and Commercial Presenting Organizations: APAP seeks nominees affiliated with large arts or talent agencies and from commercial presenting organizations to bring balance to the board’s current composition.
- Representation from Small to Mid-Sized Presenting Organizations: Candidates affiliated with small to mid-sized arts presenters, who can bring insight into the challenges and opportunities faced by organizations with limited resources and local/regional reach.
- Representation from Artistic Organizations: Executives or senior staff from arts-producing or artist-centered organizations, who can speak to the creative, operational, and community-facing aspects of running such entities.
- Representation from Outdoor and/or Festival Presenters: Nominees with strategic experience in outdoor or festival presentation, to inform board decisions with sector-specific insight on audience development, large-scale logistics, and non-traditional venue challenges.
A nomination does not guarantee an invitation to join the board, as all nominees go through a comprehensive review process led by our Nominations Task Force. Recommendations are then reviewed by APAP's Governance Committee, with final approval by the Board of Directors. Nominees from previous years that have not yet served on the APAP Board can be re-nominated.
Be part of collectively shaping the future by nominating yourself or a colleague.
The deadline to submit a nomination is July 31, 2025.
