What we are looking for
Creative Arts Workshop (CAW) is actively seeking Teaching Artists to lead classes and workshops at its 80 Audubon Street downtown New Haven location. CAW aims to help participants engage meaningfully in creativity with hands-on activities and skills-building in the visual arts.
CAW is hiring on a rolling basis for Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer terms.

Creative Arts Workshop believes that creativity can transform those touched by it. We employ working artists who are passionate about their practice and/or profession, and have an ability to communicate skills, concepts, and techniques.
What to expect
Reporting to the Department Head, the Teaching Artist provides high quality instruction to participants. CAW classes are designed for adults, or children in age groupings. This is a part-time position. Teaching artists can teach workshops (1-3 sessions), short form classes (between 4-7 sessions) and long form/ full-term classes (bet. 8-15 sessions). New teaching artists start with a 1-3 session workshop of 2-3 hours per session. After the initial workshop, teaching artists can be scheduled for one or more offerings per term (we have 4 terms per year).
Responsibilities
- Develop a course outline and a supply list that students will need in order to participate.
- Provide instruction to participants during scheduled classes and workshop times/days.
- Take regular attendance and communicate health and safety protocols as needed.
- Complete online timesheet to process payment.
Qualifications
- Individuals who have consistently executed a level of expertise in artistic production in one or more artistic disciplines.
- Familiarity or interest in different cultures and visual art practices within communities.
- Priority is given to artists with a track record of successful teaching in the arts.
Anticipated Start Date
CAW hires on a rolling basis for the Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer terms.
The process includes submitting an expression of interest (Teaching Artist Application Form), participating in an interview and engaging in a discussion about CAW’s goals and how new offerings might support them.
Applicants should be prepared to discuss their prior teaching experience, approach, medium, and provide references.
Compensation
Pay is based on the length and duration of the course and years of instruction at CAW. New teachers begin at $28 per hour for classes. Workshops pay $38 per hour.
