  • NJ Advanced Crash Investigation – Two Weeks

    Dates: September 15–26, 2025
    Location: Morris County Public Safety Training Academy

    Kean University’s Statewide Comprehensive Traffic Safety Program is proud to present this two-week Advanced Crash Investigation course, offered free of charge to law enforcement crash investigators. This training is made possible through funding and support from the New Jersey Division of Traffic Safety.


    Course Overview
    This second level of crash investigation training builds upon the foundational principles covered in Basic Crash Investigation. Officers will learn to interpret and apply evidence gathered at crash scenes to resolve more complex problems and scenarios. The course includes hands-on exercises and case studies to enhance practical application and investigative confidence.

    This course also prepares for Crash Reconstruction and other specialized crash investigation training.

     

    Topics Include:

    • Vehicle dynamics
    • Work and energy principles
    • Acceleration and deceleration factors
    • Time and distance analysis
    • Speed determination from yaw marks
    • Advanced mathematical review
    • Airborne crash analysis
    • Momentum
    • Introduction to vectors


    Who Should Attend
    This course is ideal for officers looking to expand their crash investigation expertise and develop the technical skills necessary for conducting serious and fatal crash investigations.

     

    Prerequisites
    Completion of the NJ Basic Crash Investigation course (or equivalent experience) is required.


    Required Materials
    Students must bring the following items to class:

    • Basic scientific calculator (cell phone use is not permitted for calculations)
    • 360-degree protractor
    • Colored pencils
    • Drawing template issued during Basic Crash Investigation

    By submitting a request to register for this course, you acknowledge that you have read, understand, and agree to the following terms:

    1.   Registration Is Not Guaranteed:
    Submission of a registration request does not guarantee enrollment in the course. You will receive an email from Rich Maxwell confirming your enrollment status no later than three weeks prior to the course start date.

    2.   Cancellation Policy:
    If you are unable to attend, you or your agency must email a cancellation notice to maxweric@kean.edu at least 14 days before the first day of the course.

    3.   Replacement Policy:
    If you are unable to attend and a replacement is available, you or your agency must email a substitution request to maxweric@kean.edu at least three days before the first day of the course. The email must include the name of the officer being replaced as well as the replacement officer’s name, rank, email address, and cell phone number.

    4.   Failure to Notify and Attend:
    If you or your agency fail to provide the required notification and the enrolled officer does not attend on the first day of class, you will forfeit your registration. Additionally, you and your agency will be prohibited from registering any personnel for NJDHTS-sponsored training courses (listed on NJSafeRoads.com) for a period of no less than six (6) months from the start date of the missed course.
