Every baptised child must have at least one Godparent.
A Godparent's role is to support the child in the development of the Catholic faith. He or she is responsible for teaching and setting a good and holy example of living the Catholic faith. Therefore, at least one Godparent MUST be a Catholic who has been Baptised and Confirmed.
Non-Catholic Christians who serve as an important support to the faith life of the child may be considered as Christian witnesses.
The Baptised and Confirmed Catholic Godparent(s) will also need to provide a copy of their Baptism Certificate.
"By section 8 of the Canon, every child to be baptised shall have at least one, but usually two godparents or sponsors of whom at least one shall be of the same sex as the child and of whom at least one shall be of the opposite sex. Either or both of the parents may act as godparents or sponsors. Godparents or sponsors shall be baptised persons and should be persons who will faithfully fulfill their responsibilities both by their spiritual nurture and instruction of the children committed to their charge and by the example of their own godly living.”
Canon Law also states: Can. 872 "Insofar as possible, a person to be baptized is to be given a sponsor who assists an adult in Christian initiation or together with the parents presents an infant for baptism. A sponsor also helps the baptized person to lead a Christian life in keeping with baptism and to fulfill faithfully the obligations inherent in it. Can. 873 There is to be only one male sponsor or one female sponsor or one of each. "
