PADDLE SAFTETY INFORMATION
GIVE WAY TO OTHER WATER USERS
Always stay out of the main channel where large yachts and big ship manoeuvre. Never go in front of other craft. Everything is bigger than you, and sailing boats do not have brakes. Also motor boats or sailing craft may not have seen you.
CARE IN THE SUN
Plenty of sun screen, especially children (and perhaps wear a hat).
LIFE JACKETS OR BUOYANCY AIDS ARE COMPULSORY
Buoyancy aids or life jackets must be worn at all times. Harbour Patrol boats may order persons not wearing a secure (fastened) buoyancy aid ashore.
TIDAL AWARENESS
To paddle against the tide, wind or river flow (or all three) paddle very close to the river bank (sides)
On booking your hire vessels, you will be advised of the tides times, please pay attention to them. Attempting to return to St Winnow with out enough water may get you stuck in the mud.
Under no circumstances, please do not take the vessel out to sea beyond Readymoney Beach. It would foolish and very dangerous.
We are more than happy to advise you on a route and destination—just ask!
LAUNCHING AND RECOVERY
Like crossing a road, look left and right for anyone else on the water and visually check for obstructions before setting off.
Take care when returning to shore, be aware of others. Egressing the kayak can be trickier than you expect, please be careful.
CAPSIZE
If you capsize your buoyancy aid will support you. Climb back onto your craft. If you cannot remount, secure you paddle, and paddle (with your feet) to the shore. Do not leave your kayak, it is a big float and will keep you afloat, and it is much easier for a rescuer to see.
To signal for help wave your arms or paddle, shout or whistle. Never do any of these things as a joke.
PENALTIES FOR LATE RETURN OR DAMAGE
Give yourself plenty of time to return the kayak. The charge for late return is £10 per item per hour. Charges will be made for damaged equipment.
Never drag your vessel over the rocks, the slipways or the beach (or anywhere). Always carry it.
LITTER
Please throw nothing into the water, as it will wash ashore. Do not spoil what you have come to enjoy.
MOST IMPORTANT RULE — HAVE FUN!
