  • Hazardous Agents

  • Anesthetic Gases

Indicate which categories of hazards will be used in the study:
  • Chemical and Biohazard Use

For chemical and biohazard use, Institutional Biosafety Committee approval may also be required.Additional requirements are required for the use of chemical and biohazardous agents: Schedule a safety considerations meeting with Jim McEvers, Laboratory Compliance Manager, at jmecever1@emich.edu. Submit an SOP for safe handling and disposal of contaminated materials.
  • Radioactive Agent Use

  • Additional requirements for the use of radioactive agents:

    1. Schedule a radiation safety considerations meeting with Jim McEvers, Laboratory Compliance Manager, at jmecever1@emich.edu.

    2. Submit an SOP for safe handling and disposal of radioactive and contaminated materials.

  • Other Hazardous Agents

  • Controlled Substances

Refer to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency's list of Controlled Substances.
  • Additional requirements are required for the use of controlled substances:

    1. Schedule a meeting with Jim McEvers, Laboratory Compliance Manager, at jmcever1@emich.edu.

    2. Submit an SOP for safe handling and disposal of all controlled substances.

  • Animal Housing and Procedure Locations

  • Building and Room Information

The questions below will ask specific information about the EMU locations at which research will be taking place.
  • Protocol Narrative

  • Section 1: Project Overview

  • Section 2: Justification for the Use of Animals

The following questions will ask you about your rationale for the use of animals and consideration for alternatives.
  • Rationale for the Use of Animals

Two questions below will ask you to explain your rationale for the use of specific animals in your study.
  • Consideration of Alternatives to Live Animal Use, Painful Procedures, and Unnecessary Duplication

The Animal Welfare Act regulations require researchers to consider alternatives to procedures that may cause more than momentary or slight pain or distress to the animals and to provide the methods used and sources consulted to determine the availability of alternatives, including refinements, reductions, and replacements. Alternatives should be considered during the planning phase of all animal use proposals.
  • Potential Future Consolation Information

In some circumstances, conferences, colloquia, subject expert consultants or other sources may provide relevant and up-to-date information regarding alternatives in lieu of or in addition to a database search. If a consultant was used for considering alternatives, provide the following information to document the source of information/consultation.
  • Section 3: Experimental Design

Provide a concise description below of the experimental design, describing all experiments to be performed.
  • Section 4: Non-Surgical Procedures

  • Describe in detail all non-surgical procedures to be performed on live animals.

    • Procedures described here must be referenced in the previous section.
    • Animal monitoring and management (as applicable) must be addressed in the "Adverse Effects & Animal
    Monitoring and Management" section .
    • Each subsection below should be completed as it applies to the protocol.
    • If a subsection does not apply, state “N/A” (Not Applicable).
    • If non-surgical procedures WILL NOT be performed on live animals, skip this section.

  • Terminal Procedures

Please explain the following if they apply
  • Blood and Tissue Collection in Live Animals

Please explain the following if they apply.
  • Behavioral Studies

Please explain the following if they apply.
  • Methods for Administering Experimental Agents in Live Animals

  • Please explain the following if they apply.

    • Describe all non-surgical methods that will be used to administer experimental agents in animals (e.g., tail-vein injection,
    retro-orbital injection, oral gavage; etc).
    • Provide details such as total volume (agent + vehicle) in any one injection; location of repeated injections (e.g. rotating IP
injection sites to minimize soreness); size of gavage needle, etc.

DO NOT list surgical methods (e.g., implantation of cannulae, stereotaxic injections) – this should be described in the "Surgical Procedures" section.

  • Induction of Anesthesia/Sedation for Non-Surgical Procedures in Live Animals

Please explain the following if they apply.
  • Other Non-Surgical Procedures in Live Animals

  • Post-Procedural Care for Non-Surgical Procedures in Live Animals

  • Section 5: Surgical Procedures

  • Describe in detail all surgical procedures to be performed.

    • Procedures described here must be referenced in the "Experimental Design" section which is in the "Protocol Narrative" document.

    • Animal monitoring and management (as applicable) must be addressed in the "Adverse Effects & Animal Monitoring and Management" section.

    • Each subsection below should be addressed as it applies to the surgical procedure, for each type of surgical procedure that will be performed.

    • If a subsection does not apply, state “N/A” (Not Applicable).
