Notes
Evaluate daily water temperature (should be within the species minimum feeding threshold)
Limit (ration) /cease feeding based on temperature and feeding response
Remove uneaten food within 15-20 minutes
Maintain minimal aeration continuously to prevent DO crashes
Use surface agitator or heater to maintain ice-free zones (for ponds prone to icing)
Evaluate DO at surface level, mid-depth, and a calm, ice-covered area once weekly
Increase aeration or break ice manually /with a de-icer if DO < 5 mg/L
Monitor un-ionised ammonia twice weekly using a cold-water calibrated kit
Perform a 10-20% water exchange if > 0.1 mg/L NH₃
Postpone grading, crowding or other handling until water warms again (where possible)
Evaluate for visual signs of infection / stress twice weekly (e.g. pale gills, excess mucous, fin erosion, abnormal swimming)
Contact your aquatic veterinarian if > 5% animals display abnormal symptoms
Ensure a backup power supply available
Monitor inlet /outlets for blockage by ice /debris daily
Schedule procedures such as surgeries, vaccinations, tagging, tank maintenance, etc. late autumn or early winter when waters are warmer
Test aeration systems : 30-minute system test and verify air output at multiple pond depths
Ensure aeration systems are serviced regularly
