  • Work Related Car Expenses

  • This question is about claiming motor vehicle expenses for work-related travel.

There are two ways to claim.

Cents per Kilometre Method - Claim a fixed rate (up to 5,000 km per year). No receipts needed, but you must show how you calculated your travel.

Logbook Method - Claim the work-related % of all car costs (fuel, servicing, rego, etc). You need a 12-week logbook and receipts.

You can’t claim trips between home and work unless you're carrying bulky tools or travelling to an alternative work site.

  • Did you use your car for any work-related travel?
  • Did you keep a logbook?

  • Work-Related Travel Expenses

  • This question is about travel expenses you incur in performing your work as an employee. They include expenses such as:

    • public transport, air travel and taxi fares
    • bridge and road tolls, parking fees and short-term car hire
    • meal, accommodation and incidental expenses you incur while away overnight for work
  • Did you incur any travel expenses in the course of performing your work as an employee?
  • Work-Related Clothing, Laundry, and Dry-Cleaning Expenses

  • To claim a deduction for a work-related expense:

    • you must have spent the money yourself and weren't reimbursed
    • it must be directly related to earning your income
    • you must have a record to prove it (usually a receipt).

You can't claim for clothes you wear for work that are not specific to your occupation, may be worn in multiple professions or are everyday clothes. For example, you can't claim for:

    • a bartender's black trousers and white shirt
    • a business suit
    • a swimming instructor's swimwear.

If your total claim for work-related expenses is more than $300, you must have written evidence to prove your claims.

  • Do you wear a work uniform (with a distinctive business logo) or occupation-specific clothing (e.g chef's chequered pants)?
  • Did you purchase a uniform or any occupation-specific clothing using your own funds?
  • Do you do a separate wash of your work clothing to your regular clothing?
  • Did you purchase any protective clothing such as fire-resistant clothing, sun protection clothing, safety-coloured vest, gloves, overalls, aprons?
  • Did you purchase any steel capped shoes (may be purchased from any retailer) or non slip shoes (only purchased from a medical supply specialist - not a regular shoe retailer)?
  • Work-Related Self-Education Expenses

  • To claim a deduction for self-education expenses, you must be able to show that there is a close connection between the course and your work activities at that time.

You can claim a deduction if:

    • the course maintained or improved a skill or specific knowledge required for your then current work activities, or
    • you could show that the course was leading to, or was likely to lead to, increased income from your then current work activities.

You cannot claim a deduction for self-education if:

    • the course relates only in a general way to your current employment or profession, or
    • the course will enable you to get new employment.
