• Petition to Lynchburg City Council

Reverse the Closure of Jackson Heights Art Studio Proposed in the FY2026 Budget
  • To the Honorable Members of the Lynchburg City Council:

We, the undersigned residents, artists, educators, and supporters of the Lynchburg community, respectfully urge the Council to reconsider and reverse its decision to close Jackson Heights Art Studio as part of the proposed Fiscal Year 2026 Budget.

Jackson Heights Art Studio is more than just a facility; it's a vital community space that fosters creativity, education, and economic development, and for some, it serves as a lifeline. For years, the Studio has served as an inclusive environment for residents to engage in the arts, cultivate skills, and strengthen community ties.

Closing Jackson Heights Art Studio would:

    1. Eliminate access to affordable arts education for countless students, especially those from under-resourced neighborhoods.

    2. Displace community programs that rely on the Studio for workshops, exhibitions, and performances, many of which serve youth, seniors, and marginalized groups.

    3. Erode the city's commitment to supporting cultural diversity and artistic expression, both of which contribute to Lynchburg's reputation as a vibrant, forward-thinking community.

The Studio represents an investment in our city's future,  providing positive outlets and enhancing the overall quality of life for our residents.

We respectfully request that the Council:

    1. Restore funding for Jackson Heights Art Studio in the FY2026 Budget.

    2. Engage with community stakeholders to explore sustainable solutions for the Studio's continued operation.

    3. Recognize the social, educational, and economic value the Studio provides to Lynchburg.
We believe that preserving Jackson Heights Art Studio aligns with the city's values and long-term vision for a thriving, equitable, and culturally rich Lynchburg.

We urge you to reconsider this decision and stand with the countless residents who believe in the power of the arts to transform lives and communities.
