    Filing Status Definitions

Your filing status determines your tax rate, standard deduction, and eligibility for certain credits. Review each status below and choose the one that best applies to your situation for this tax year.

    • 🔹 Single
You are considered single if you are unmarried, divorced, or legally separated as of the last day of the tax year.
    • 🔹 Head of Household
To qualify, you must be unmarried, have paid more than half the cost of maintaining a home, and have a qualifying dependent who lived with you for more than half the year.
    • 🔹 Married Filing Separately (MFS)
Each spouse reports their own income and deductions. This status may limit eligibility for certain credits or deductions.
    • 🔹 Married Filing Jointly (MFJ)
You and your spouse file one combined return. This status often results in higher income limits and better tax benefits.
    • 🔹 Qualifying Widow(er)
You may use this status for up to two years after your spouse’s death if you have a dependent child. It provides the same tax benefits as Married Filing Jointly during that period.

For detailed IRS definitions, see IRS Publication 501 – Filing Status.

Form W-2 – Do Not Use Final Pay Stub as a Substitute

Although it may be possible to estimate a preliminary tax return using your final pay stub, a pay stub is not an official IRS-recognized income document.

Taxpayers must not use a final pay stub, Form 4852, or Form 1099-R to file an income tax return before receiving an official Form W-2 Wage and Tax Statement from their employer. If your employer has not provided a W-2 by the time you need to file, please visit our website under Tax Client Resources and request your current Wage and Earning Statement to prepare your taxes.

Warning: Failure to use an official W-2 may result in your return being delayed, held, or audited by the IRS.

Why your final pay stub may not match your Form W-2:

    • Pre-tax retirement contributions (401k, 403b, etc.)
    • Pre-tax health, dental, or vision insurance premiums
    • Dependent care or medical reimbursement account deductions made during the year
    • Employer-paid group life insurance coverage over $50,000
    • Other taxable benefits or adjustments your employer must include on the W-2

If you receive a corrected Form W-2C or a new Form W-2 after your return has been filed, and the information differs from what was reported, you must file an Amended Return (Form 1040-X) to correct your income with the IRS.

Need help locating your W-2? Visit our website and open the Tax Client Resources section for instructions.
