• 2026-27 WAS Scholar Application

    Program participants must be high school juniors (11th grade) and residents of Washington. The application deadline is Tuesday, October 13th. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis while space lasts.

  • Washington Aerospace Scholars Program Description

    Phase One Online Course (October 21st to mid-March)

    Cost: Free

    • The University of Washington offers five optional science credits. The fee is $255, any changes to cost will be shared by December.
      • Families experiencing financial need may apply for Credit Tuition Assistance to cover up to 100% of the cost.  Families who qualify for government assistance programs are given priority within the amount of funding available. 
      • Tuition Assistance applications for UW Credit will be available in December, before registration for the UW credit.  
    • Students are expected to spend at least 7-10 hours per week to complete course assignments. Lessons are asynchronous.

    Participation in Phase Two is not required. Scholars may choose to only complete Phase One.

    Phase Two Summer Residency (July or August)

    Cost: $1,850 - covers all program supplies, food, room/board and transportation during the Residency.

    • A six-day residency program held at The Museum of Flight in Seattle. Acceptance to Phase Two is based on performance in Phase One.
    • Scholars will be able to list their preference of residency date in March. While we make every effort to take scholar preferences into account, we cannot guarantee scholars will get their first preference of week.
    • A 50% deposit towards the cost of the Summer Residency will not be due until scholar have been notified of acceptance into the Summer Residency in April. Final payment will be due in May 2027.
      • Families experiencing financial need may apply for Residency Tuition Assistance to cover up to 100% of the cost.  Families who qualify for government assistance programs are given priority within the amount of funding available. 
      • Summer Residency Tuition Assistance Applications are sent in March along with Residency invitations. 

    The WAS Foundation offers tuition assistance, up to 100% of cost, for families experiencing financial need.

    This application cannot be saved and therefore needs to be completed in one sitting. It should take only about 20 mins to complete. We highly recommend reading the FAQ on the WAS website before applying to the program. Our program does have a limited number of spaces, and we recommend that you submit your application as soon as possible. Acceptances made on a rolling basis!

    To make the completion go smoothly, please have your Parent or Guardian's name, email & phone number on-hand. 

    After you submit your application, your legal parent/guardian will receive an email that asks them to review our program policies and complete a certification statement approving their child's participation in the program. Your parent/guardian must complete this certification for you to participate in the WAS program.

    • Upon submission of this application, an email will be sent to the parent/legal guardian’s email confirming an application submission and asking the parent/guardian to complete a certification statement approving their child's participation in the program.

      Note: It will be the student's responsibility to follow-up with their parent or guardian to ensure that the online confirmation is completed by October 16th.

    • Join the Aerospace Mentorship Program (AMP)!

      In order to provide intentional support for students to learn and grow in a close-knit learning community, WAS offers an optional mentorship program called the Aerospace Mentorship Program (AMP!). Scholars in AMP! receive personalized advice and guidance through the WAS online course by an online mentor in small, weekly group meetings. Mentors are either current college students or professionals with experience in online course work.

      WAS AMP! participants will:

      • Receive guidance in completing the online course work.
      • Build a close-knit STEM learning community with a small group of peers.
      • Receive personalized advice related to post-high school education and career preparation.
      • Learn to communicate and advocate for themselves.
      • Serve as advisors by providing input on the WAS program experience.

      Students participating in AMP! are expected to meet with their Mentor group online at least once per week.

      We cannot guarantee that every student who desires a Mentor will be matched. Please answer the questions below to let us know if you’d like to be considered for the WAS AMP! program.

      - I understand that students will be selected for the online component of the WAS program (Phase One) based on completion of the application, program capacity, geographic location, and responding to requests for additional information by the deadline. Eligibility for the Summer Residency (Phase Two) is based on completion of all lessons, timeliness of assignments, and overall academic performance in Phase One. Selection for the Summer Residency is determined by a lottery which includes all participants who meet the eligibility requirements for Phase Two. Efforts will also be made to ensure geographic diversity of selected applicants.

      - Should I be be selected for Phase Two, the program will attempt to accommodate my choice of week, but ultimately I will need to find a way to accommodate the session I have been assigned.

      - If I participate, WAS representatives will contact me to up to six years beyond my participation to learn of my college and career plans. This will be done via email, mail, or phone. This information will be used to assist WAS in determining the impact of the project.

      - I understand that name and school may be disclosed for purposes of program participation and press releases. Other personally identifiable information will not be disclosed.
